A subscription list has been started at Rockham p ton to raisa £1000 for a boat racn to bo rowed next June. The first prize will be £600, the second £300, and the third £100. The champion Kemp will take part provided the handicap is not, more than ssecs.

The third series of matches entered into by W. G. George, the professional mile champion (and well-known ex-amateur champion), and W. Cummings, of Paisley, was commenced on May 12 at Preston. The distances arranged are at three-quarters of a mile, a mile, and two miles respectively, each for £200 (£IOO a-side). The three-quarter mile race, which it was known would favour Cummiugs took place with the result anticipated. Oummings was made favourite, and, having won the toss, he chose the inside position. George, however, led out, and with his opponent close at his shoulder, made the running at a good pace until about 100 yds from home, wheu Currmings challenged him for the lead, and quickly obtaining it went by and won by five yards, the ex-amateur being unable to spurt at the finish. The time — 3min 1 3-s?ec — wa«, though not fast, by no means bad considering the state of the track.

The High School football players selected to play against their rivals of Christ's College will leave Dunrdin on Thursday ni-xt. The competition for places has been very keen and has resulted in the choice ot' the following players :—: — Full back, C Haggitt ; three-quarter — Oweu, Hendrie, A Gillies ; half — R Gillies, Cran ; forwards — Campbell (captain), M'Kay, E. Gibson, Webster, M'Brearty, Patersou, H. Morris, F. Gibson, W. Adams.

After playing their match in Ohristoburch the team will proceed overland to the West Coast, where they will play four matches and give three assaults-at-arms. A very careful training for this last item has been going on for some time back under the instruction of Mr Hanna, who, with other masters, wilL accompany the team. The football men on the Coast are doing all in their power to render the visit a success, and if the weather in thab rainy region prove only fairly propitious a very enjoyable trip is assured.
