WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL

The ordinary meeting of this county council was heid at the Council Chambers, Hawksbury, on Friday last. The members present were : — Mr James Groen (chairman), and Crs. J. C. Buckland, P. Bolt, t}. Orickinore, J. Porteoup, and J.D. Kitchie. PETITIONS. Thirty*sevon ratepayers in the Merton riding petitioned;— *' Wo, the undersigned, object to the appointment of any ranger, as the people have quite sufficient to do without the council appointing any person to prowl about tha distriot and live on his neighbours." Mr J. Hajj; also wrote with respect to the same snbioot — T,ho. council decided uot to appoint any danger, at present. Sixteen ratepayers residmg in tho Beaconstield portion of Merton asked the council t,o take. into consideration i\y& state of the road leading tf> the Omimi dairy factory, and railway station, and passing through the pjjoper-iws of Messrs Eailie, and Marshall. The petitioners pointed out that they had given time and labour to make the road passable. — The petition was received, and referred to the inspector for a report. DEPUTATION. Mr Dennis O'flalloran again appeared i&arge the opening and forming of the roue) Hue from the mountain track to section block IV, Merton riding, leading to t,is property. — It was resolved to instruct the inspector to see that Mr J. Several roatfs in tfce Hawksbtiry riding were getting into a bad state for want of maintenance metal. — The report was received, a/id it was resolved to call for tenders for the works referred to, to be considered at the April meetiug. The inspector reported on the road through sections 7 and 8, block 11, North Harbour and Bluest iv district, and the clerk was instructed to inform Mr A, Clark and the other petitioners

that the council on inquiry found that while the survey was made of the road there was no land acquired by the Provincial Government and the Blueskin Road Board, and the council was not in a position to acquire the road at .the present time. He Semple's road, the inspector reported that he estimated that £3 or £4 would cover the cost of the necessary work. — The council resolved to have the work done as requested by Semple at the earliest moment. FINANCE. The Finance Committee reported the examination of accounts for the month amounting to £174 Is. * Tne committee also endorsed the action of the inspector, who reported that he had suspended the dayman in the Blueskin riding, J. Stewart, for having absented himself from his work and not meeting the inspector by appointment to assist in laying off a road at Purakanui, and recommended that Stewart should be dismissed, and William Storey appointed dayman in his stead. — The report was adopted. CORRESPONDENCE. From Mr C. Bond, signifying his willingness to do certain work on section 44, block IV, North Harbour and Blueskin district. — The council declined the offer at present. From the Secretary Charitable Aid and Hospital Boards, Dunedin, requesting information as to the rateable value of rateable property of the county for the year commencing the Ist April 188S.— The clerk was instructed to supply the information. - From Mr William Dow, who asked the council to make passable a road leading through section 75, block I, Waikouaiti.— Referred to the inspector. From Mr M'Kenzie, surveyor, Dunedin, forwarding plans of certain road lines in the county. The council shortly afterwards adjourned.
