" WARRIOR" IN TASMANIA.

OUR SPECIAL'S DESCRIPTION OF THE STUD tf ARMS IN THE " TIGHT LITTLE ISLAND."

WAVERLEY STUD FARM. No. 11. Grazing in a secluded spot in one of Mr Agnew's paddocks I fell across a very compact jnare resembling very much Sylvia, the queen of tbe Auckland Stud Company's harem. I speak of Tripaway, who foaled to Monarque in 1883. This mare was bred by Alfred Page in 1877, and was gotby Horatio, by Maribyrnongout of Roseof Denmark. Tripaway's dam was Merrytoes, by Lord of Lynne out of (Quickstep. Considering Tripaway's filly foal came into existence last November, she certainly supprised me at her rapid growth and substance. Wild Wave, whom I referred to in my last article, comes from a good stock, and as, no doubt, this year's colt may be heard of at some future date, I give her pedigree in full : —

Of the other mares with foals at foot I was much pleased with Evelyn, bred in 1875 by Mr 0. V. Frazer, of Victoria, by Lady Kirk out of Doubtful, by the imported sire King Alfred. So far Evelyn has not been a success at the stud, having missed in 1882 and 1884. Between these years she had twins. Her colt foal looks very promising, and so does her yearling filly, Mother Hubbard. Elfrida had a very pretty foal run ning by her side, and Mr Agnew informed me that ho was built on the lines of his sire, Waverley Elfrida was bred by Mr R. Taylor, and is at present six years old. She is by Torchlight out of Ruby, by Mozart from Griselda, by Old English Gentleman from Kathleen, by Snoozer. Old Love, full sister to May Queen, possesses a splendid foal filly by The Assyrian. This mara took " Warrior's " fancy very much, and brought my memory back to my visit to the Auckland Stud Company's farm in 1885. Old Love, if she was but five years older, would be taken for Lady Ravensworth, the daughter of Voltigeur (winner of the English St. Leger and Derby of eight and thirty years ago). Old Love is well bred, being by Castle Hill out of Mayflower, by Boiardo (sire of the Poet, who ran second to Lantern in the Melbourne Cup of 1864). _ Like the majority of brood mares in Tasmania, Old Love was bred by one of the Field family. She got a bay colt on the banks of the River Jordan in 1885, and Mr Agnew very appropriately named him The Promised Land. He certainly is the smallest two-year-old I have seen in the island, but as the ages no doubt will thicken in a Savaiaaka. His breeding is good enough.

Previous to our departure from the paddocks to the stables we fell across May Queen and her black colt, Jack in the Green. May Queen's first loal was in 1878, when she got Rose, a chestnut filly by St. Albans. She threw a filly foal to Manuka in 18S2. Her foal at foot is by The Assyrian, and, judging by his hindquarters, should prove a racehorse in the course of time. This is the first time one has paid a visit to the son of Countryman— Tinfiuder. Littlb Footsteps, unfortunately, slipped this year, and Mr Aguew had her taken to the Lakes. She is now in foal to Tho Assyrian. Little Footsteps is the dam of Chaldean, one of the best two-year-olds in Tasmania, of whom I will refer to in my nest. (To be continued.)
