RACING IN NEW ZEALAND. WELLINGTON RACES.

Fiusr Day — February 2. The weather for the first day's Wellington Raciug Club's Summer meeting was lovely, and the atteudauce better than usual. There were good fields for each event and good racing. The following are the results:— n , r TELEGRAPH STAKES, <Ji i.>sovs ; second horse lOaovs from the stakes. Three-quarters of a mile. Mr Geor R e Hunter's Whisper, 7st 121b (Huxtable) 1 \f r v £ utler>£ > Marlborough, Bst 131b ... (Derrett) 2 ur II 11I 1 luncred'a Forester, Bst 51b ... (Cuneeu) 3 Wakatipu and Spear also ran. Much difficulty was experienced in getting a 8 S Forester, as usual, being very refractory at tue post, Marlbprough got away at the lead,

with Whisper in close attendance, Wakatipu third, Spear and Forester some lengths behind. Coming to the cross road Forester went up with a good rush, and looked as if going to overhaul the leader. Huxtable, however, shook Whisper up, when Tancred's horse got on level terms with him, and coming into the straight Whisper took the lead from Marlborough. A very pretty race between the three ensued in the straight ; Whisper, however, winning with comparative ease by a couple of lengths. Time, lmin 17£ sec. Inside dividend, £2 18s ; outside, £3 6s. HURDLE HANDICAP, Of 80bovb ; second horse 103Ovb from the stakes. About two miles and a-half . Mr Gentry's Jim, list ... ... (Owner) 1 Mr Alexander's Freebooter, lOst (Alexander) 2 Mr Butler's Secretary, list 91b ... (Lyford) 3 Kangaroo (list 121b), Reputation (9st 71b), and Zulu (9st) also ran. At the start Secretary, Zulu, and Jim took the lead, and at the first hurdle Zulu went up to the front, all jumping well, Jim lying second and holding hard, Kangaroo third. The first time round all were going slowly. Crossing the road Freebooter led, with Zulu second and Secretary third ; Kangaroo last.' Rounding the top turn all closed up, Zulu maintaining the lead, with Jim second and Secretary third. Coming to the home turn Secretary, Freebooter, and Jim were together in the lead, and a grand race ensued down the straight. Almost immediately the horses were in full sight, Jim came away and took the lead easily, and despite the struggle made by Freebooter, managed to pass the judge's box ahead of the others by several lengths, Freebooter being second and Secretary third. Totalisators : Inside, £2 19s ; outside, £2 12s. HACK HURDLE RACE, Of 15sovs. Winner to be sold for £20. About one mile and a-half. Ivo ... ... ... ... 1 Piako ... ... ... ... 2 Rainbow ... ... ... ... 3 Trooper also ran, but threw his rider at the first jump, and bolted off the course. Rainbow led at the start. At the back of the course Ivo went up and won easily, Piako about six lengths away. The rider of the second horse was hooted by the crowd as he passed the judges box, the impression being that the horse was pulled. A meeting of stewards was immediately held, and J. Thomson, the owner, and Stephen Harris the rider, and the horse were disqualified for life. Dividends : Inside, £2 12s ; outside, £2 ss. The winner was sold for £21. WELLINGTON CUP, Of 40030V5 ; second horse lOsova. Two miles. Mr G G Stead's Beresford, 7st 81b (Huxtable) 1 Mr T Thomson's Little Scrub, 6st 21b (Poulson) 2 Mr J Saunders' The Shah. Beresford was the favourite, the betting at the post being as follows :— Even money agst Beresford, 2 to 1 Pearl, 3 to 1 Tetford, 6 to 1 The Shab, 8 to 1 Strenuous; 10 to 1 each Administrator and Little Scrub. More than half-an-hour was lost in getting a start, and when the; flag fell Administrator was left a dozen lengths behind the rest. Beresford showed first at the start, but Tetford immediately afterwards took first place, with Strenuous and Little Scrub next, Pearl and Administrator last. At the turn Tetford had increased his lead to about three lengths, with Beresford and Strenuous going up. The first time past the stand Beresford and Little Scrub were a length behind Tetford, The Shah and Strenuous a couple of lengths away, and Pearl some distance behind. Administrator pulled up after passing the stand. At the back Strenuous dropped back beaten, and Beresford passed Tetford and took first place. Little Scrub and The Shah were both going up well. As the horses passed the cross road the two latter challenged Beresford, the race evidently lying between the two. Coming into the straight Little Scrub was called on and went to the lead for a few strides, but Huxtable shook up Beresford and drove him to the front again. The Shah was now alongside Little Scrub, and a great race down the straight ensued, but Beresford had plenty of racing in him, and finished a clear length ahead of Little Scrub, Ths Shah third, a couple of lengths away; Tetford, Pearl, and Strenuous in the order given. Time, 3min 38sec8. Totalisators : Inside, £2 12s ; outside, £2 9s. NOVEL RACE, Of 2550v8. Three-quarters of a mile. Matamau ... ... ... 1 Talent ... ... ... ... 2 i TeWhiti... ... ... ... 3 Rifle also started. Won easily by Mataraau. Tho winner was sold for £35. Totalisator : Inside, £1 16s ; outside, £1 18s. STEWARDS' HANDICAP. Of lOOsovs ; second horse 103ovs. One mile and a-quarter. Mr G G Stead's Russley, 9st 31b (Huxtable) 1 Mr W Bobbett'a Lady Norah, Bst 61b (Kidd) 2 Strenuous (Bst 121b), Marlborough (Bst 101b), The Shah (Bs^slb), Wakatipu (7st), and Smooth (6st 51b) were scratched, Russley and Lady | Norah being the only starters. Russley got away with a good lead, which he increased to four or five lengths the first time past the stand. At the back of the course Lady Norah crept up gradually and reduced Russley's lead to about two lengths, but was never able to overhaul Mr Stead's horse, who at the cross road had regained a length of a lead. Coming into the straight Lady Norah made another effort, but could not catch Russley, who won easily by a couple of lengths. Time, 2min 12sec. Totalisator: Inside, £1 17s; outside, £1 6s. WELTER HANDICAP, Of 75sovs ; second horse lOsovs. One mile and a-half. Mr J Saunders' The Shah. lOst ... (Clifford) 1 Mr Tancred's Orator, 7st 121b ... (Vaile) 2 Mr Davies' Girirl, Bst ... ... (Avery) 3 Marlborough (lOst 51b), Voltigeur (Bst 71b), Scraps (Bst 61b), Cupid (7st 101b) also ran. A splendid start was effected. Giriri led into the straight with Cupid, Orator and Marlborough next, Voltigeur fourth, Shah last. Opposite the stand Marlborough went upland Shah made his effort, going to the front rapidly, with Giriri next. Coming into the straight The Sbah showed first, and a pretty race ensued between The Shrh, Giriri, and Orator, the latter eventually gaining second place. The Shah won easily by a couple of lengths. The weather for the second day's races of the Wellington Racing Club's Summer meeting was lovely, the attendance fair. With the exception of tha Wellington Racing Club Handicap, for which only three started, fair fields were brought out for each race, and the racing was good throughout. The following are the results :—: — LOCAL HANDICAP, Of 5050v3. Second horse lOsovb from the stakes. One mile and a-quarfcer. Mr Peters' Smooth, 4st 121b ... (Peters) 1 Mr Hosking'e Voltigeur, Bst ... (Williams) 2 Mr M- Coil's Fabrication, 7st 121b ... (Farell) 3 The Shah was scratched. Oupid (Bst), and Matamau (7st) were the other starters. Fabricationled at the jump, Smooth losing a couple of lengths by stumbling, XUe latter,

however, quickly regained the lost ground, and had rushed to the front as the horses came past the stand, with Fabrication second and Cupid third. At the back of the course Voltigeur made his effort, and crept past Cupid and Fabrication, but the effort did not last long, and the latter again went to the front place, inturn relinquishing it to Smooth, who led into the straight and was never headed, winning easily by three lengths. The horses were in a cluster nearly the whole of the distance, and there waß a good race until the weight began to tell. Time, 2min 16sec. Totalisator : Inside, £1 98; outside, £2 10s. HURDLE HANDICAP, Of 70sov8 ; second horse lOsovs from the stakes. About two miles. Mr Gentry's Jim, list 12lb ... (Gentry) 1 Mr Drlscoll's Reputation, 9st ... (Peel) 2 Mr Alexander's Freebooter, lOst 51b (Alexander] 3 Secretary (list 101b), Kangaroo (list 81b), and Zulu (Bst 71b) were the other starters. Kangaroo got slightly the best of a straggling start, and led over the first hurdle, with Secretary lying second. Coming to the turn, Freebooter displaced Secretary for second place, and passing the stand the first time was leading Kangaroo. At the top turn Kangaroo went up and again took the lead. At the back of the course Reputatioa came up and took the lead ; but at the cross road Gentry took Jim up, challenged Reputation and passed him, Zulu being third. In the straight there was a race between Jim and Reputation, the former winning easily by a couple of lengths. Totalisator : Inside, £2 8s ; outside, £2 ss. In the Hack Hurdles, of Issovs, winner to be sold for £25, one mile and a-quarter, Johnny was first, Cloud second, aud Halicore third. Totalisator: Inside, £1 9s ; outside, £1 12s. The winner was bought in for £25. WELLINGTON RACING CLUB HANDICAP, Of 200sovs ; second horse to receive 25sovs and third horse lOsovs from the stakes. Mr W Bobbett's Lady Norah, 7st 121b (Kidd) 1 Mr J Saunders' The Shah, Bab 51b ... (Clifford) 2 Mr G G Stead's Beresford, Bst 6ib (Huxtable) 3 There were no other starters. The betting at the post was as follows : — Even money against Beresford ; 2to 1 Lady Norah ; 6to 1 The Shah. The flag fell to a good start, the colours of Mr Saunders' horse first showing in front, Beresford next. At the cross road The Shah was a length ahead, Lady Norah running a waiting race. The Shah kept the lead past the stand, Lady Norah running very strong. At the top turn Beresford made his effort and went up to the leader,racing beside him until opposite the stand, when he fell back beaten, and Lady Norah went into second place. Rounding into the straight The Shah and Lady Norah were on even terms, and both whipping. Gradually the latter drew ahead. Then a splendid race ensued down the straight between the two, Lady Norah winning by a clear length. Time, 3min lOsec. Totalisator: Inside, £4 7s; outside, £4 10s. NOVEL RAOR, Of 25aovs. Three-quarters of a mile. Talent ... ... ... ... 1 TeWhiti... ... ... ... 2 Matamau ... ... ... 3 There was an exciting finish; Te Whiti coming up with a rush in the straight and threateuing to overtake Talent, who was leading. The latter, ridden by Carey, won on the post by half-a-neck. The winner was sold for £10. Totalisator : Inside, £6 6s ; outside, £4 2s. SELLING RACK, Of 508OV8. Winner to be sold for lOObovs. Mr Tancred's Spear,7 st 101b ... (Vaile) 1 Mr Buckridge'a Scraps, 6st 131b (Buckridge) 2 Rollo,7st2lb ... ... (M'Momn) 3 Fabrication also started. A splendid start was effected. Rollo and Spear racing neck and neck past the stand, with Fabrication next. At the top turn all were in a bunch, and it was impossible to say which was leading. Tbis was not left long in doubt, however, for here Fabrication jumped ahead and took a lead of a length, which increased to Bk« lengths. At the cross road Spear was leading ! Scraps by half-a-length, and Rollo several j lengths behind. This order was maintained to the finish, Fabrication passing the post in a common canter by a dozen lengths. The owner of Spear entered a protest against Fabrication, alleging that the latter jambed Spear on the rails at the top turn. The evidence of all the jockeys was taken, and the protest upheld. The machines paid out on Spear. Tune, 2min 22sec. Totalisator: Inside, £2 15s; outside, £3 4s. HUTT PARK HANDICAP, Of 80sovs ; second horse lOsovb. Three-quarters of a mile. Mr D Twohill's Cinderella, 98t 51b ... (Carey) 1 Mr J Hunter's Whisper, Bst 31b (Huxtable) a Mr J Saunders' The Shah, Bst 71b ...(Clifford) 3 Smooth (6st 51b, declared 121b overweight), Marlborough (Bst 111b), Forester (Bst 81b), Little Scrub (7st 131b), and Wakatipu (6st 71b) also started. At the start Marlborough had all the best of it, Forester being again left at the post. The Shah and Whisper were next to the leader, followed by Cinderella, with Little Scrub going up on the outside. At tho home turn Whisper had passed The Shah and was racing with Marlborough. Coming into the straight Whisper led, and Marlborough fell back and was passed by The Shah, while Cinderella and Little Scrub came up, the former going through them all and winning by a head, The Shah only a head behind Whisper. Time, lmin 17|sec. Totalisator : Inside, £3 ss ; outside, £4 15s. The total amount passed through the totaliaator on the first day was £4457, and second day £3480.
