BRIGHTON.
February 4.— Our annual concert and ball was held in the schoolroom lately, ostensibly for the purpose of providing prizes and a picnic for the school children. The vocal and instrumental music, thanks to visitors from town, was all that could be desired, but there were loud growls about the eatables ; and though there was a considerable number of people present, all that remained to provide for the prizes and picnic were a few shillings ! • Visitors. — During the late holidays a considerable number of visitors have patronised this locality.
Agricultural. — The farmers hereabout have started to cut their oaten hay crops. They say the crops are light and inferior compared with those of last year. Migration. — Some of the settlers, finding it hard to make a living here, have quitted the district, and others are about to follow their eaample. School Matters. — The school committee held their monthly meeting on the 25th ult. Au unusual feature of this body is that one of its members belongs to the gentler sex, and the committee is consequently under petticoat rule.
