Two novelties have been introduced this year in the programmo issued by the Riverton Regatta Club, vie., — a Maiden Race and a Model
Race. The former is a sweepstake of 5s for
each boat, to be subsidized by £1 from the club's funds, and is to be open only to those
who have never pulled in a race before. The latter ought to give the juveniles an opportunity of testing the sailing capabilities of their miniature specimens of naval architecture.
A Wellington telegram states that the referee in the glove contest between Murphy and Fake for the light-weight championship of New Zealand has awarded the fight to the latter, on the ground of a foul blow and that Murphy refused to retire to his corner when ordered to do so.
Jack Hall, the Australian light-weighfc champion of Australia, has challenged Murphy, and fche latter has accepted.
A Tauranga telegram states that at the anuual regatta there Albert White, of Mercury Bay, won tho sculling race easily. Barber, also of Mercury Bay, was second. The race for open sailing keel boats was won by the Hiria, with the Tetau second. Both boats were owned and manned by Natives. It was a close and exciting finish.
Four members of the Port Chalmers Tennis Club suffered a defeat at the hands of the Bruce Club. The Port representatives were: Messrs Dixon, Campbell, North, and Leonard ; and the Bruce team: Messrs Nevill, Baldwin, Fox, and Gourley. The New South Wales Government intend that £500 shall be the prize for the centennial yacht race, and £300 to be divided for the other races.
A boxing match to a finish under tho Marquis of Queensberry's rules, for £10 a side, between Tommy Williams, of Invercargill, and Robert Hislop, of North-East Valley, was made on Saturday night, to come off shortly. The lawn tennis court on the Caledonian grounds was well patronised by the members on Saturday, and play was continual during the afternoon. At a meeting of members during the day the following were elected as members of committee to act in conjunction with Messrs H. Mitchell and G. Capstick, who represent the committee of the Caledonian Bowling Club : — Messrs Jones, Stewart, M'ludoe, Leary, and Gillon. Mr M'lndoe was appointed honorary secretary.
In a wrestling match, at Sydney, between T. Cannon and J. Connor for the Grceco-Romau championship of the world, best two out of three falls, Connor won, securing the leading fall in 14min 7sec.
The Intercolonial Bight-oared Race between a crew from Williamstown (Victoria) aud one from Adelaide was won by the Victorians by 15 lengths.
