TOKOMAIKIRO SHOW.
President, Mr James M'Oaw; vice-president, Mr William Grey j general committee of management, Mesdra J Hislop, W Tweedie sen, D Hislop, W Aitcheson, J Millar, J Henderson, P Williamson, J Farquharson, J i* Chalmers, W Hewitson, James Allison, M Henderßon, D Tweedie, W Ilobinson, It Robinson, John Sutherland, A M'Callum, T Howie, liobert Murray jun, J Porter, E Clegg, James Witt, William Moore, John Martin, Godfrey Foster, and A Fraser, The annual show of the Tokomairiro Farmers' Club was held at Milton on Tuesday. There was a very fair attendance of the public, but the show, taken all round, was a very poor one, and the necessity for amalgamation with one or other of the adjoining districts was more than ever apparent. In some of the classes, however, the entries, though not numerous, were good in point of quality. No Lincoln or merino sheep were shown, but some of the Leicesters among the prizetakers showed excellent breeding, and were fit to compete at any show in the colony. Messrs Gray and Macpherson were the principal exhibitors in sheep, and the former took the cup for most points ; though in the Leicester class the points were very equally divided. The show of cattle was an exceedingly poor one. There were hardly any entries except in Ayrshires, and in that class Mr Howie, who took nearly all the prizes last year, did not compete. Very few shorthorns were entered, and there was no competition in any of the classes, because Mr James M'Donald was the only breeder who exhibited. Mr R. Gawu, of the Taieri, had some very fine draught horses entered, and he succaeded in taking some of the best prizes. There was also a very geod show of dairy produce, and most of the classes were well filled. The powdered butter, however, with the exception of three or four exhibits, was scarcely up to the m;irk. There were no pigs, only one or two thoroughbred horses, and three or four fowls shown. Some of the judges were much too slow in getting through their work. Indeed, so late was the judging protracted that in spite of the paucity of entries, it was considerably after 6 o'clock before the show was over. The jumping contest was the last thing decided, and tho stewards made rather a muddle of it ; but eventually, after a great many trials and a good deal of talking, the prizes were awarded to those horses which the stewards thought had jumped the best. The local brass band played selections during the afternoon, and some strolling players also enlivened the proceedings a little with their music. In one corner of the ground there was a marquee, to which Jhe public were admitted on payment of Is to witness the boxing and wrestling matches that took place therein. The principal man of the show seemed to be the West Coast champion, who offered to have " a friendly spar with a friend " for the edification of those of the public who had parted with their shillings, or to "knock any man out in four rounds for a fiver." Then there was a smart youth who spent his time engraving names on watches and selling a compound to " eradicate " grease stains — a compound,he declared, that was "made in Yokohama, where the silkworms grew co large tbat they had to be chained up in the back yards to keep them from biting the dogs !" A number of gamesters were also on the ground, and they succeeded in more than one instance in imposing upon the credulity of the people. One simple-minded individual went away from one of their tables with a smile on his face and a purse for which he had pair! a pound in his pocket. He had fondly imagined that there were three gold sovereigns snugly reposing iv the purse, but when he opened it, great was his lamentation to find that the three gold sovereigns had in some mysterious manner turned into as many halfpence ! A few people were also swindled with the three-card trick. We have to thank the secretary (Mr Inglis) for having courteously placed all information regarding the show at our disposal.
