Novkmukr 122. — We cannot grumble at the weather in this part of the country, for we fget all sorts. One day au icy sou-wester, next day scorching hot, with the usual quantity of sand flies ; a stiff nor'-wester following sends the sand in clouds along the beach. To-night the hailstones are striving to find a weak place in the roof of <he house However, on the whole the ulimato will compare favourably with that of *ny other part of Southland. Garden crops are looking very well considering all School.— Some steps are being -'taken [to establish a school here. It is \ cry much needed, as wo have a considerable number of children fit to attend who receive no education except tho little time the parenls devote to them. The biilding might answer a twofold purposo— sciiool and church. Then there is the paraon ; rs he only visits us once in every 20 years, the effect of his visits, whatever good he might do, naturally wears off between those lengthy intervals. Mixing.— Mr Logan is putting some of his gold extracting machines on the beaches between hero and Fortrose. He has been looking at Waipapapa Beach, and it is estimated that the sand will go from sdwt to 7dwt to the ton, and that the machine will put through 53 tons per day. I am given to understand that it takes five men to each machine. Miners here are anxious to see the result. It is to be hoped they will prove a success.
