FOOTBALL.
The Carlton team were banqueted at the Athenaeum Hall on Saturday evening by some old Carltonian and friends, 140 sitting down to a firstclass spread. There were any quantity of flattering things said, and a determination expressed to try and maintain t' ould club's supremacy next season. Geelong is to receive a similar compliment at the Pivot next Tuesday. By the way, there's an element creeping into football that I have often wondered has not cropped up before. I allude to the professional business, You see, the takings of a first-class football club amount to hundreds of pounds during a season, and, naturally enough, the players who prove the attraction are displaying some desire to share in the spoil, I met the matter face to face last evening, when I attended a meeting of prominent players of a certain club, who were promised £5 trophies each — that is, anything they might choose to that amount — as a recognition of their prowess during the season just passed. A motion was put to the meeting and carried, that they considered £10, each little enough for their services. Now, where is this thing going to end?
