CRICKET.
A special meeting of the Victorian Cricketers' Association last night decided by 14 votes to 7 to rescind the resolution previously adopted declining to accord the patronage of the association to the team of English professionals who are on a visit to Australia under the cegis of Messrs Shaw aud Shrewsbury. To my mind this is a confession of weakness ; for there can bo no two opinions that the English promoters broke faith most flagrantly with the Melbourne Cricket Club, and the association were quite right in their action in the first place. What may have been the cause for the sudden change of front I know nofc, bufc such wheel-about business as they have been guilty of is not likely fco strengthen public confidence in their ability to adjudicate upon delicate questions, as they evidently possess no more backbone than an oyster.
A very sad occurrence took place at Horsham last Saturday during the progress of a cricket match there. W. D. Campbell whilst batting was taken suddenly ill with effusion of blood to the brain, and died shortly afterwards. He was an accountant at the Commercial Bank at Murtoa, and highly respected. Old Victorians must not confound him with Will Campbell, the one-time "pride of Melbourne." W. D. was a much younger man — only 25, 1 believe.
