WAIKAIA.
October 17. — We are at present having some very unseasonable weather — in fact it is colder than it has been all the winter ; the heavy, cold winds, accompanied by driving rain, tending to make everybody and everything feel and look miserable. This state of affairs has continued now for upwards of two weeks, and the allprevailing cry is " When will this rough weather cease ? " j Mining,— Farming is at a complete stand- ! still, but not so mining. There is water in abundance and all the miners are very busy sluicing, and as it were " making gold while it rains.' 1 It would appear that mining here is about to receive an impetdsj as a number of residents are taking a thorough interest in the boring-rods which iVir Valentine has kindly offered to lend. A strong committee has been formed to prosecute the work, which will be kept going by subscriptions. Strong support has been promised, and it is intended to obtain the services of an expert to superintend operations. Racing.— A meeting for the purpose of ! getting up races this year was held in Mathe- J son's Hotel on the 15th inst., but owing to a very meagre attendance it was decided to postpone it until Friday, the 21st inst;.
