RAILWAY DISASTER.
A dreadful collision occurred on September 1 on the Midland railway. A train filled with excursionists going to Doncaster to witness the races at that place collidsd with anotter tram and was wrecked. Two excursionists were killed and 70 injured. The Midland train w« standing on a crossing a mile from Doncaster while tickets were being collected, when the Liverpool express dashed into ifc. The guard van was smashed ,to atoms and the first carnage of the Liverpool train was telescoped by the naxt. It was a long time before the injured and dying who were wedged in the wreck could be rescued. Twenty-four persona were kUiea on this train, and many of the injured cannot recover. The disaster was caused by defective signalling. It is said the brakes were applied but failed to act. The majority of the victims were residents of adjoining towns. In consequence of the races and pressure* -of traffic tne ordinary block system was suspended, and traffic was worked by hand signals and flags. A curve ip the line hid the express train until withm a short distance of the excursion train.
