The D.A.F.C. mot a team from the Highland Rifles at Tahuua Park on Saturday. . The ground was in splendid order and the weather ail that could be desired, while the fair sprinkling of spectators had an opportunity of judging football as played under association rules. Armour (captain), for the D. A.F.C., won the toss, and elected to pluy with the sun behind. ! Moncrieff kicked off for the Rifles, and the ball was , kept well in mid-field, neither' side gaining much advantage. '., Some of Rifles showed their knowledge of the dribbling game and rather unexpectedly essayed to assault the home teams's goal, but the ball was well stopped by Findlay and returned out of danger. The play was open and fast. The Highlanders now pressed the Dunedin, but their back division proved their strength, and when the skirmishers found a, way through, their shooting was erratic, and opportunities were lost. The Dunedin somewhat rallied under this pressure. Stewart, Bowdler, and Armour doing some neat work removed the danger, putting the Riflemen on the defence, whose back division in turn had a busy time, and ultimately Bowdler scored for his team, by a long shot put neatly beyond the goalkeeper's reach. The Highlanders worked hard to equalise matters, but the too frequent " hands " caused them to forfeit as many free kicks, thereby losing hard-fought ground. During the second spell, with the light against them, the Dunedin had a busy time, but it seemed mainly a game between the back divisions of each team, as the forwards, when on the ball, let it beyond their reach and into the opposing backs, who, instead of feeding their respective forwards, directed it ahead and into the opposing back division. Gibson and M'Gregor -brought the ball into dangerous proximity to the Rifles' goal, when Bowman kicked behind for defence. Armour placed the " corner" neatly and enabled Gibson to head it into goal; but the custodian was on the alert, and an exciting piece of head play ensued until Moncrieff put the ball out of danger. The Highlanders' right wing forwards made a grand run, and M'Millan was enabled to score for them just on the call of time) thus ending an enjoyable and keenly -contested game — one goal each. All round, "the men played well, but the Highlanders being the heavier men, it told in their favour. The teams were : — Highland Rifles : Goal — M'Kinley ; backs — Bowman and Groves; half backs— Stowart and Moncrieff; forwards — Carver, M'Millan, Twiuame, Sutherland, Galloway, Dempster. D.A.F.C: Goal— Pollock ; backs— Findlay and Stewart ; half backs — Le Cren and Thor n; forwards — M'Grego'r, Pollock, Gibson, Leslie, Armour, Bowdler. Referee; Mr Macdonald l ■
