and the Ofcago Hutatf Club meeting also closed on Saturday night. The former are only moderate— in keeping with the stakes offered—but the Dunedin jumping events are well pat- - ronised by, Canterbury owners. Weights for the North Canterbury Steeplechase Handicap appeared on Saturday. Faugh-•a-ballagh, with 12st 101b, will probably not visit .Amberley, though he might win even with that "weight, and I look upon Orient as the best treated in tha race. Irish King's list will steady him, and, unless* from Secretary, Orient has little to fear. Juggler or Schoolboy should wm the Farmers' Steeplechase. TRAINING NOTES. The tracks had just got Into good order when tain set in this morning, and active work will be again suspended for an indefinite, time., Nelson has improved very much the last few days, and is scarcely perceptibly lame. Stonyhurst, on the other hand, has not done so well, and has such a leg- that it- seems hopeless to expect that he will stand preparation It is a great pity, for although I did not expect him to stand when he was first put into work three months ago, he has come on so well, and looks so handsome, that I was beginning to hope that I might be wrong, and that he would carry off the New Zealand Cup and Canterbury Cup. Artillery is still going on well, but it will require careful usage to bring him sound and fit to the post. Fair Nell and Torrent are doing good work; the latter is a particularly good galloper. O'Brien's team are all doing well, and indeed this may be said of all the other horses here, as they have not had enough strong work to break them down. Titbit and Leon, however, will hardly be fit to run in the New Zealand Cup. Mr Webb is said to have refused £200 last ■week fpr the Albany — Wave gelding (brother to Ruby). He may be a good one, but is hardly vrorth that money I should say. Mr Filbrow, Mr and Mrs Bay, and a couple of M backers " left for Sydney on Saturday by the Hauroto. A good morning's work was done on the ccurse this morning, but there are no new developments. BETTING. Since last report Leon, Hermitage, Der•wentec, and Lochiel have been backed for a few hundreds each. The present prices are : 100 to 10 agsfc Lochiel UOo — 6 Derwenter 100 — 5 Hermitage 100 — 5 Leon. Moana is inquired for and firm at 100 to 7* Other business is confined to the Melbourne and New Zealand Cup doubles at 100 to 1. COURSING. Captain Cotton went down to Dunedin by sea on Saturday to keep his engagement with Scotb on Friday night and Saturday. He has not done 80 much work as .he might, but he will make a good race of it for- all that. Not the slightest interest is taken here in the match.
