SPEIGHT'S CHAMPION CUP. A beautiful day brought a very large field of sporting men together to witness the running for Mr Speight's Champion ' Cup, which took place yesterday (says the Oamaru Mail of the 18th) on Mr John M'Lean's Greenlands property. Hares were very plentiful and extremely wild, no less than five getting away at the start before the dogs could be slipped to them. In point of number of entries the, event ranked as second only this year to the Waterloo Cap, 24 dogs entering the list for ttie 1 £70 given in stakes in addition to the valuable cup presented by the late Mr Speight. - The Miller is the property of Mr George Aitcbisop, who takes the cup and; £36. The/
runner-up belongs to Mr G. Brace, of the Phoenix Mill, and he takes £18 and 36gal beer, presented by the Phoenix Brewery Company, Timaru. Fawnhope, the property of Mr Judge, Christchurch, being third dog, takes £10. Th« fourth dog, O'Sullivan, D. O'Brieu's Christchurch; fifth, Mr Simpson's Ploughboy, and sixth, Mr M'Auly's Moonbeam, each take £5.
