GRAIN AND SEED REPORT.
Messrs Samuel Obk and Co., Stafford street, report for the week ending August 17 as follows :— -
Wheat.— The market for this product la still in the state of inactivity which has characterised it for the past few weeks, millers showing no inclination to purchase more than on a hand-to-mouth principle. Prices, nevertheless, are unaltered so far, but we fear a decline will take place when the sowing iB over. Odd lots move off in small quantities for seed purposes at up to 4s 6d, but prime milling red straw is only worth 4s 3d, and velvet 4s 2d ; medium to good, 3s" 9d to 3s lid; inferior and fowls' wheat, 3s 3d to 3s Bd.
Oats.— The demand for them is still quiet, local business being what is keeping the market up, the shipping being almost at a standstill. Our intercolonial markets, we hear, are getting supplied better from the South, so that to cope with them we must submit to smaller prices. Bright oats are only in demand, ruling rates being for very prune samples, Is B§d to Is 9d ; ordinary, Is 7d to* Is 8d ; medium and discoloured, Is 3d to Is 6d and in small request. Barley.— Nothing offering; consequently prices nominal. Potatoes. — No alteration in the market, prices being still low, say from 30s to 40s for prime Derwents.
Chaff.- In good demand at late quotations. Seeds.— Byegrass : A very good demand exists for machine dressed from eld pasture, but farmers' undressed samples are neglected so far. Of course it is early in the season, and with a continuation of the present fine weather more business will result! Machine dressed old pasture is worth 3s 6d to 4s; Poverty Bay, 4s lOJd. Cocksfoot: Demand fair, while prices are maintained, say from 4|d to 5d for good seed ; ordinary, 4d to 4§d. . Clovers : These are also moving off somewhat freely for so early in the season, and a briskdemand is likely to ba on in the course of a fortnight. Samples and prices on application. . .
