SHAG POINT.

June 15. — Some months ago I wrote stating that Mr A. M'lntosh, formerly ,manager of the Shag Point coal mine, was busily engaged boring for coal in the neighbourhood of Pukeiviti, and that he felt ' satisfied that coal existed thereabouts. During the boring operations he met with satisfactory ' indications that a seam or seams was in close proximity to their operations, but, unfortu.uately, after boring a distance of 350 ft he , struck a layer of fine drift and large quantities ,of water, which compelled him to suspend operations. Nothing daunted, and not easily thwarted, he turned his attention in another direction, and successfully concluded arrangements fora lease for 21 years of the land belonging to Messrs Allan Bros, for the purpose of searching for minerals. This land is a continuation of that upon which the Shag Point mine is situated. After obtaining the lease Mr M'lntosh was not long in commencing operations, and has succeeded in discovering a fine seam of coal sft wide on the outcrop. He is now making preparations for opening it out towards the dip, and is fully satisfied that he rhas dropped upon a discovery which will ultimately recompense him for his former and present outlay; whilst the finding and opening up of a new coal mine nrust prove of incalculable benefit both to the district and colony alike, more especially in these depressed times, when we are all, individually and collectively waiting, like Micawber, for something to turn up. I trust to be able in a short time to send you further particulars.
