Christie,— On the 31st May, at Saddle Hill, James Christie, sen. ; aged 80. Filleul.— On tbe 25th May, at Napier, Helen Blanche, eldest daughter of W. Q. Filleul, of Shirley Cottage, Oamaru ; aged 25 years. Pati'erson— On the 27th May, at Tapanui, Margaret, M'Vicar, the beloved wife of J. Patterson; aged 50 veara. Johnston. -On the 7th April, at Waterside House, Montrose, Scotland, Joseph Johnston, late of Joseph Johnston and Sous, fishcurers, &c; in the 86th \ ear of his age. Snider —On the 27th May, at Dunedin, Abraham Sai er; aged 41 years. Deeply regretted.
M. Tame has stirred up the Parisians by the declaration that English literature is, on the whole, greatly superior to the French. " The comparison,'' he adds, "is a blow to our national amour propre, and especially to the ignorance of fhe French in the literature ■of other countries."
