• A glove contest took place at Wellington on Saturday 'night between Murphy, light-weight champion,, and Brooks, of Dunedin, r for £10, and was witnessed by 300 people. A Provisional Committee of the newly formed Canterbury Rifle Association has decided to holcj. a prize firing under the N^w Zealand Rifle ' Association ' rules on Boxing Day and following days'.- t ' A" pedestrian match between Sherman, of Hokitika, and Murfit, of Greymouth, for £20,' - came off' on the racecourse at the latter place on Saturday afternoon. Sherwin won the 300 yds and 200 yds, Murfit winning only the 100 yds. The latter was in, good condition. A- meeting was, held at the White Hart Ho;tel, Martonj on Tuesday, 26th April, for j the purpose of forming a Lacrosse ' Club. Mr Buchanwas voteo! to the chair, aud Mr Hi Mitchell acted as ■ secretary, pro tern. It was decided that a club be formed and be called the" Marton Lacrosse Club. The following officers were elected :— -President, Rev. A. Towgood; vice-president,' Mr Esam;, captain, Mr j D. Buohan^secretary and treasurer, Mr Harry ■Mitchell, Bank of New Zealand, Marton. The committee to consist of' president, captain, I secretary, and Messrs Barnett, F. Ross, Tern perley,, Thomson, The club have secured some racquets, from' Wellington, ■ and some of the members intend practising, but. the season cannot properly open till the football season is well advanced.
