WINTON.

January 10. — A service was conducted in the English Church last evening by the Rev. C. K. Richardson. So large a "congregation crowded the seats of the church in every part that the space available for the congregation was taxed to the utmost. The rev, gentleman preached an admirable sermon, which was listened to with deep interest by those present. School.— The "report *;f the inspection of the Wiuton school was laid before the committee at its last meeting. The passes were 75 2, the low percentage resulting from failures in the upper classes. .

Statistical. — I learn from the registrar the vital statistics for the district for the past year are as follow: — Births, 100; marriages, 17 ; deaths, 16. The fine weather of the last three weeks is having a beneficial effect on the country, and the crops are making good progress, and promise to be much better than those of last year. The orchards have suffered from the hailstones at, the beginning' of last month, the apples having been bruised in the early .stage of their growth. • Riyee Boabds.— A coin inuuicat ion has beeu received from Wellington to the effect that the petition of the owners of property on the Wintou stream in the upper part . of the district to be formed into a " river board " has beeu granted, and that the election of the board is to be proceeded with at an early date. I have also heard that a similar petition from the lower part of the district has likewise been granted. The contemplated works will, it is thought, be of immense benefit to the land adjoiniug the stream.
