MINING NOTES.
About 12 months ago we (North Otago Times) were informed that gold had been found in payable quantities on the Kakanui river — that 10s a day and over could be easily earned, but that the owner of the land on ascertaining that men were at work digging for gold ordered them to desist. The fact that the land on the sea beach from Kartigi to the Oamaru cape holds gold which it has been found payable to work proves beyond a doubt that the rivers of the district run through auriferous country. The difficulty of obtaining leave to prospect on private property is the barrier that stands in the way of the grojnd being worked. For many years precious metals have been fonnd along the rivers flowing into the sea between Moeraki and Oamaru, but the land adjacent to these rivers is now private property. Among the 79 passengers which left Wellington in the Kentish Lass for the Kimberley goldfields was one special party numbering 52. Each member paid £25 into a general fund, and out of this their passages were paid and 60 days' provisions provided. The members elected a captain and storekeeper, and they took with them 11 horses, with drays, &c. The Wellington correspondent of the Lyttelton Times states that Mr Seddon, M.H.R,, has received a letter from a
friend, dated June 24, which is not too encouraging. The writer says : — " The diggings are not as reported. About 800oz has been obtained, all in shallow ground, in little gullies near the ranges, got by scraping with a knife. The prospectors have left the field, and are here in Derby. One of them, Slattery by name, was in our camp, and we had a long yarn with him for two or throe hours. He told us that if he were to go up again he would have to go out prospecting other places, because the old ones are worked out and ho did not know for a certainty whore to get a pennyweight of gold. Anybody that goes out, therefore, has to prospect for himself. If you know anybody wi&hing to come, try and stop them till they hear better news."
