Junk 21. — A meeting was held in the Abhenteum on the 19th inst for the purpose of forming a chv>s ftiid draughts club. The meeting was well attended and Messrs James Stewart, J. A. Grout, E. P. Brown, E. Hardman and James Thompson were elected a committee, Mr Thompson to be secretary and treasurer.
The Weather for more than a week past has been very severe — rain or snow falling nearly every day. If this continues much longer there i? every prospect of a big flood.
Athen;eum. — A meeting of the committee was held on the 12th inst. Owing to the reading room having been so well patronised by the public it was decided to enlarge it, tenders to be called at once. Ten pounds wa voted for new books and it was decided to hold sixpenny readings once a fortnight for the benefit of the Institution. A letter was read from Mr Cowan, M. TI. It. intimating that he had made applicatiou for an enoowment. It must be very gratifying to the committee to find that their efforts in supplying a long felt want in the community have been so successful.
