Mataura P. and A. Society's Annual Show at Wyndham.
(FROM OUR OWN CORBF/SPONDENT. )
The show, one of the greatest local events of the year, took place On the society's ground last Ihursday. Tb,e<?, ay was beautifully fine, and the attendance of. the public good. Strangers who hacl c"ime from afar were well rewarded, as the ouow of cattle, sheep, and horses is beyond question the best ever held under this association. The general arrangements were also well and faithfully carried out, and with the exception of a little delay in the arrival of the attending members for sheep, all these gentlemen did yeoman service. In Ayrshire cattle, Messrs Cargill and Anderson, Mr A. Gait, sen., and Mr Forsyth were the largest exhibitors, but the firm carriedmostlyeverythingbeforethem. In shorthorns Mr H. Carswell and Messrs M'Lean Bros, came well to the front, the former getting the best o£ it. In Herefords, Mr James Holms (Wamiahaka) ard Cargill and Anderson had the field to themselves, and pretty evenly divided honours. George IV (owned by Mr Holmes) looked in the pink of condition, and attracted the eyes of several Hereford fanciers. The Polled-Angus class were poorly represented, although the stock exhibited were good. Messvs Blackley Bros, and the N. Z. and A. L. Company were the only exhibitors. The entries for tbe crossbred classes were numerous, and the judges must have had some difficulty m adjusting matters. Many did not consider ihe show of horses up to> last year, and in draughts there is little dou&fc that such was the case ; but in hacks a £eM[ of 13 turned out, and the judges had their work cut out in placing the horsss. The class under 15 hands brought nine before the judges, Botto of these contests wore watched with great interest and cheers were bestowed on the successfull prizetakers. Most of the the sheep fcJasses* were vrefl represented, and in many instances the competion was very keen. There were twocaps awarded by Mr Holms — a, £10 lO* for largest prizetaker in torses, cattle, and sheep, which was seciured by Messrs Blackley Bros, this year,, but has to be won again before finally becoming their property ; and the silver cup, valued at £5 os, for the largest prize-t^er in long«woolled sheep, which was secured by Mr John Hal], of Edendale. It may -be mentioned incidentally that neither Oargill and Anderson nor Mr Holmes competed for these cups, and considering Messrs Blackley Bros, aud Mr Hall had $o compete against a wellJtnown breeder, who carried off the cup f.c# the largest prize-taker in stock at the GWe show, they have reason to be contested. Subjoined is the prize-list : —
