DEATH OF SIR P. SCRATCHLEY.

Brisbane, December 3,
A telegram from Townsville announces the death of Major-general Sir Peter Scratchley, High Commissioner for New Guinea. General Scratchley, who had been suffering from jungle fever for 10 days, was' returning from New Guinea to Australia in the steamer Governor Blackall, and died while that vessel was between Cook Town and Townsville.
Sydney, December 3.
Colonel Roberts, of the New South Wales Permanent forces, states that he received a telegram only yesterday from Sir Peter Scratchley, dated from Cooktown. Sir Peter expressed himself hopeful of roaching Sydney by the Bth December, though at the time of wiring he was hi a precarious condition.
