WINTON.
August 25. — Mr Fred. Fulton delivered an address on temperance last evening to a large audience, the Oddfellows' Hall being well filled in every part. Mr Baird presided, and in a few brief sentences introduced the lecturer, who eloquently dwelt on " what liquors are made of," and exposed a good number of the frauds of the trade. The facts, brought out were certainly rather startling, notwithstanding the statement of the lecturer that he kept 50 per cent, inside the truth. The cause must bo looking healthy in this neighbourhood, judging from the enthusiasm of the meeting and from the large number who have signed the pledge and donned the " bit of blue."
Farmers' Oluh. — Our Chamber of Agriculture met on Thursday last, and a fair number of members assembled at the usual hour. Some routine business was got through, and the subject of local expenditure was set down for discussion at the meeting to be held on the last Thursday in September. lam glad to say that the society continues to give promise of usefulness and benefit to 'the agricultural interest. The society continues to constantly receive ' Hansard" and other Parliamentary papers; besides oiher publications bearing on agricul-' ture.
Agricultural. — Southland has had the finust winter known for many years. Fanning operations are well in hand, and, barring the low prices, farm matters have an encouraging appearance.
