WANAKA. (from our own correspondent)

August 16. The Wbitmr ie serenely fair at present, and the young growth promises an abundant pasturage during the enßuing spring. The bhow has entirely disappeared from the sunny glades and facings, and there is not such a depth on the hills as many persons would lead strangers to imagine. Hacinq Matters in thia locality are not so lively as our sporting fraternity would wish. The preliminary meeting of the Wanaka Jockey Club' was held in the Wanaka Hotel on the eve of the 9th insd , when, through the inclemency of tho weather and other causes, there was but a meagre attendance, some halfdozen persons only being present.; therefore a second meeting was convened at tbe same place on the eve of the 16* h, when about double the number of sportsmen attended. A judge, starter, clerk of. the course, &c. were named and appointed; but whether they will officiate when called upon remains to bo seen. I am much afraid the present depressed state of tbe times will considerably damp the ardour of these upcountry meetings. A tidy 6um, I. have heard, was collected or promised in the room, which, added to the sum the Club is said to have in hand, should give the matter a fair start

River Mining— 'i he Clutha River, which is now steadily rising, old colonista say has not been so low during the past 20 years. Much gold has been obtained during the winter in congequen.ee.
