Notes from Reeifton; (FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Rbhft 'N. Apr/1 19th

Durinjr tho day some inquiry for leading stocks has boen made, and a few transactions have taken place. Brokers look a little more lively than usual, and the •stationers admit having 1 sold some transfers varying from Is to 20. On the whole, the market seems to be improving in mo^t of tho linos. The negotiation for joint use of tbe Jusfc-in-Time Company's shaft by tho Imperial Compiny has how fallen through, and these Companies are now B' rangers. It is a great pity that tho energetic prosecution of works iv these neighbouring claims has not met with better success.

The low-level tunnel at Black's Point, in which work has been discontinued for some time, will again be prospected It appears from the statemtmt of Mi Edward Sbaw, who is now canvassing the district for pupport in the forthcoming election, that the Government havo decided upon supplementing local subscriptions at the rate of pound for pound, and it ib, therefore, almost a certainty that the extension of the tunnel will be resumed shortly. Mr Shaw is down country doing & close canvass. Mr Wakefield'B supporters are getting tired ; they report Mr Wakefielci will return next week. The othrr side doubt it. Bhbfton, April 20th. Mininsr matters to-day do not leave any room for comment Fair progress is being mnde in all our mi'ie-, and good accounts aro reaching town from all quarters. Tho Gulden Fleece Company have made a start today with the other air-comprossor, which has just been finished, and which ia fouud to work well. Rhefton, April 21st.

The battory returns are as follow : — Keep-it-Dark, 301oz amalgam from 189 tons ; Welcome, 3J9oz from 90 tons ; Oriental, 160oz from 80 tons. The Oriental cleaned up with 113oz 19dwt of retorted gold for the fortnight, 160 ions having been crubhed.

Bbhfton, April 24th. Not having been able to move aboul; these iaar, few days, I am not in a position to givo an extensive report from the minim. I can merely mention that fair progress is reported from the field, and that works are being pushed ahead with all vigour. Some good stone is being raised from the Golden Floeee, and[a small cru-hing will take place shortly. The Golden Treasure main shaft v gointj down at the rate of lOt'fc per week. The Keep-it-Dark ia crushing fair stone. The Lankey Creek Company are inviting tenders for connecting the two tunnels lately under construction. The weather is very flno, but a great deal of Bickne°B prevails, and a number of people are complaining of various illnesses

Rbbfton, April 25th.

The brokers complain of slack business for tbe lost few days, but during to-day several inquiries for ■tock have come to band, and some transactions have taken place. The prices, however, are not up to the estimates of holders, who expect values to improvo with the completion of more machinery. Globes, which hive been quiet for some time, are again coming into notice, as the tunnel is nearing the bottom of the shaft. At tho time of last report about 50ft remained to bo driven, and as the ground wa.-i very easy at tbe time, it was thought that a foitnight would sou tho work finished, binco then, however, the nature of the ground has changed, and only 10 to 15ft can bo made per week All BUtface works are progressing very satisfactorily. Since cleaning-up last Saturday the crushing iv the Oriental battery baa been discontinued, and men are now engaged renewing shcols. tramway, paddock, >vc. No change has taken place in the Goldon Point uiiuo or battery. Intermittent cru»hings are occasionally made whenever water it) plentiful.

Tbe Hopeful Extended crushing at Boatmans is also discontinued for the present, but will probably be roburned iv a week's t>me.

Some very good stone is reported aa beinp taken out; now in tho Fiery Cro-is. A connection was made last Saturdny with tho old winze, to which an upriae from the low level has beeu constructed. Good stone is now in view, but it appears to pitch north at a greater degree thau expected. This accounts for stone not being found KOonor. The Welcome's underground machinery is not yet all delivered, but the balance is expected shortly, whon no time will bo lout in its erection. The stove Iv the stapes continues of ordinary quality. No news is to hand from Specimen Hill since last week.

A contract for tbo construction of a horse-track between Koatmana and Larry's Creak has been let by the County Council The distance is about four miles, a.d the track will be a great; boon to people prospecting iv this direction, whore a large area of virgin ground yot remains untouched.

Wbstport, April 22nd.

Sixty-three ounces of atone from the Great Republic, Wai many arc a, was crushed at the Bunk of New Zealand this afternoon, and yielded Idwt B^r, or equal to about 250z to the ton. Mining news from Mokihinui is very encouraging 1 . The Red Que< n has drive 1 130 ft on the reef, which U a out lfc wide. The Guidin? Star is in 150 1 on a 3ft reef. The stone in both claims continues as rich as ever.

Some remarkably rich specimens of stone from the Red Queen claim - which is on the same line of reef as the Guiding Star and Golden Crown, in tht Mokihinui district— are now on view at Mr Hun er's office, Kattray street A letter which has jt Bt been received from a gentleman in the district sfates that there ia now B0 tons of stone in the pa.idock, the appearance of which justifies the belief that it will yield a very large return— lOoz to the ton, he estimates.
