WAIWERA.

(from a correspondent.)

April 25th. Agricultural — The order of the day without' farmers is getting their grain away as soon ns possible, while tho roads are dry and suitable. The yield of o\ts is quite up to the farmers' expectations, some paddocks giving as muc'.i a 9 50 bushels per acre. I think I am safe in-stating that tho average of the distiict is from 35 to- 40 bushels per acre. While the wheat was partly a failure, there were several paddocks of pretty good quality and yield, lne turnip crop throughout is looking very well indeed, both in drill and broadcast. In taking: a look around, I see several of our farmers have commenced ploughing and sowing, chiefly wheat and grasa. As In former years, rust has taken some of our wheat crops before they word ripened ; the majority of U3V*avo concluded that this U chiefly duo to too late sowing Thia year there eeeais to be a general determination to get th» most of rhe wheat ii at least by May, which, we hope, will have the desired effect. Gra^a and vegetation. g'i>erai!y are looking well. Some parts of the district have quite the appearance of spring. The potato crop seeru^ to be up to tho average of previous years"Public Works. During the past week there hay been several important meetings held hero £pr_ the purpore of considering the advisability of borrowing* sum of monoy for our public bodies, road boards, &cfrom Government under the new Loan Act, and •. •. most of Us like good roads, I think the greatest nuni* be voted in lav >ur of the proposed schi me. School Matters! —This week ha 3 been inaugurated by a public meeting to consider the boundaries for a newsch ol district to be called tho South Walwera. I am pleased to see such important steps wero taken for the purpose of getting a school in the township. Tim has been sanctioned by the Board, and it is very much needed, the township being tho centre of commerce, and in a thickly-populated part of the district. After the fixing of the b.mnd.xriea, it was proposed by Mr Rccveare, and carried unanimously -" That Messrs Anderson, Taifc, Edwards, and Cauley be roappointed a committee to watch their interests, and provide the BoarU with all nccessiry information, Mr Anderson being instructed to forward a definition of proposed district to the Secretary of the Education 'Board for the Board's approval. I trust wo shall get the school built forthwith, lor it is very much needed.
