KELSO.

(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.!

April 24tli. Entertainment. — An entertainment under the auspices of the School Committee was given in the schoolroom on Friday evening. This affair wan unique in it:) arrangements, comprising five recita ions by a Mr Harlock, from Tapanui, accompanied by songa from volunteers pressed in on the occasion. Mr Harlock is possessed of a wondei fully retentive memory, and his elocutionary powers are of no mean order. Tho songs and the singing were scarcely equal to the general character of our Kelco entertainments, and to ensure success for future ventures, timely preparation is indispensable. Mr T. Butchart presided at the meeting* with his usual ability. Accident.— Mr Dunnet, of the Kelso Hotel, met with a painful accident the other day whilst drivinghomo cattle. The horse he rode stumbled, being entanglcl by a rope attached to a calf, and Mr Dunnet fell heavily, splintering the collar- one. Under Dr Douglas' care he ia progressing favourably. Agricultural.— As a proof of the fertile nature of the soil here, I may state that Mr T. Sapwell, from four bushels of seed sown by him, realised 30 bags of firat-clabS seed oats and half-a-dozen of an inferior grade Mr Sapwell's is a D.F P. t-üburban section, and Bcoro3 of acres of equal value which at present lie waste here would be quickly occupied wore they offered to the public on similar termß. Railway Matters.— Tho rush of grain to our rail-way-station is again as-mining a mo^fc formidable a?i>ecf. On Monday 12 loaded trucks left for Dunedin, but with upwards of 40 teams regularly carting in, the vacancy thus made wag speedily occupied. The goods shed is far too small, and were it extended to double its present dimensions, tho requirements of the district would be most inadequately provided for. This is a problem which must be solved by the department very soon, for if waggons cannot be reasonably expected, there mu4 be somo other means of protecting the grain, and the present building is altogether too paltry.
