WINTON.
(from our own oorrespondbnt.)
Juno 27th.
Tho Licensing Committee for the Winton Licensing District hold a mooting yesterday. There were three applications for renewals, which were all giautcii. Three applications for now licenses wero duly considered, and were granted in each caw, I should imagine tho new Act i» working admirably in th'-s district, as we have now got added to the original number of public-houses— one in the borough, ana thro* in the immediate neighbourhood, making a grand toi.&l of four of an incroase. Iv was stated by the presiding officer at one of ttie local-option polhnif-booths that not a single vote was recorded. On Saturday moraiug last three valuable horson wore run into by tlw Elbow train near tho i tap road platform, thus affording further proof of the need ot the railway-lines being fenced. Two wore killed on the spot, and tho other rendered useless Some injury was done to the engine. I say nothing as to the passengers, and tho injuries sustained by settlers having th»ir prouorty thus destroyed.
With regret I hive to notice the decca°o of one of our townunen, Mr Donald Kennedy, of tho firm of M'Leod and Co., general merchants. The deceased had been long in tho district, and was much and deservedly respected. lam not aware that ho has any relatives in the Colony.
