Our Volunteers.

An excellent muster of the Oamaru troop of Hussars paraded at thecricket-ground, Oamaru, on the afternoon of the 15th, for mounted drill, under the command of Sergeant-major Thompson, Government instructor. After some preliminary movements, the troop proceeded to a paddock in the vicinity of the North road, where they were instructed at a trot and gallop, and acquitted themselves very creditably. A meeting was held in the evening at the Royal Hotel, for the purpose of electing officers"; Captain Creagh, of the I Battery, in the chair. After some discussion, Trooper R P. Burbury was unanimously elected captain, Dr Garland assistant surgeon, Trooper Meyers troop sergeant-major, and Trooper Patterson sergeant. It was decided to let the election of the remaining officers stand in abeyance. Fourteen new members were sworn in and measured for uniform, the orders for which leave by the 'Frisco mail to-day. This addition brings the total strength of the troop up to 40. Another contingent is to be formed at Otepopo. Union Steam Ship Company's Cup.

The fourth and imal competition to decide the ownership of the Union Steam Ship Company's Cup took place at the Pelichet Bay butts on Saturday, the 17th, and the occasion was marked by the attendance of an unusually i large number of spectators. Considerable interest had been taken in the series of matches, and it was a very general opinion that the prize would be carried off by volunteer Provo, who had throughout kept ahead of his opponents by two or three points. The result of the match, however, brought about a very different conclusion to that anticipated, for Volunteer Provo broke dovvn completely at the last range, and the order in which the competitors stood after the third match was reversed. The scores made were as follow :— ■ 200 600 600 yds. yds. yds. Tl. Corporal Webster .. ..18 17 13-48 Vol. Coventry .. ..16 16 13 —45 Vol. Provo .. ..17 15 7— 39 The total scoring for the four matches stands :— Corporal Webster, 172 ; Volunteer Coventry, 170 ; Volunteer Provo, IG9. Corporal Webster is thus entitled to claim the cup as his property.
