MELBOURNE GRAIN MARKET.

The Argus of the 17th inst. says : Ereadstuffs present a duller appearance than yesterday, and judging by the prices realised for wheat at the auction sales, the conclusion must have been arrived at that the market was easier, but apparently when a purchaser, compelled to operate for shipment, makes his appearance, he is made to pay. Yesterday the highest price obtained at auction was 5s 7d, and yet we learn that for a parcel of about 2000 bags, taken to complete the loading of a vessel on tho berth which could not bo detained longer but at a great sacrifice, 6s 9d f.o.b. had to be paid. The ruimur regarding this sale, which was in free circulation yesterday afternoon, was not credited, and even to-day no belief was placed in the report. So better instance, therefore, of the irregular and unsettled state of the market could be given. At the auction sale this morning, 519 bags were quitted at prices rising from 6s 3Jd to 6s 6d, the latter being got for fair milling wheat. No prime was offered. For parcels to ship there are buyers at 6s 7£d, who cannot fulfil their orders. Taking the position of tho market into account, we refrain from giving a quotation, as some heavy holders have refused to name a price at all. There has been little done in oats. At auction only a small lot was quitted at 3s 3d to 3s 3^d. Privately a parcel of 300 bags New Zealand was placed at 2s lid in bond. Barley has been quieter again, and no particular sales have been recorded.
