TAPANUI RACES. First Dvy.—March 9th.
Tapanui, March 9th. For the Tapanui race-meeting to-day the weather was splendid, but the attendance was small. Proceedings opened with the MAIDEN PLATE. Mr J. E. Kennedy's Rattler, by Ravensworth : ' (Owner) 1 Mr R. Patterson's Blacksmith's Daughter ! i ; ' . (Bonnor) 2 M^T. Dwyer's.Barwon colt .. (J.Allen) S Four others started. Time, 3 mm. 1 sec. Only £24, went, through the totalisator, of which £4 was on the winner. > There was a good race for a mile, when Rattler came away and won by any number of lengths. ' JOCKEY- CLUB HANDICAP. Mr O. M'Kenna's Playboy .. .. ..1 ilr W. Quin's Sir Garnet ".. .. ..2 Of the nine coloured on the card, Sir Garnet was most fancied, as little as 2 to 1 being taken about him. Some time was lost in the start, but after half an hour had been wasted, all with the' exception of Laertes got well away. Sir Garnet lashed out ' and kicked Whybrow on the knee, injuring him. 'Haricot jumped away with the lead, and the' field passed the stand in a cluster the first time round. At a mile and a-quarter Playboy went up to his stable companion, Haricot, and after a struggle passed the grey, winning by two lengths ; Sir Garnet two lengths behind, Haricot and the others close up. Time, 2 mm. 50 sec. Forty-six pounds went through the totalisator, £8 of which was on the winner. Mr Kennedy's German Louis secured the Hack Race, winning the first and second heats. DISTRICT HANDICAP, Of 20 soys. Messrs Moonoy and Quin's Merrybird, Bst 21b (Ward) • 1 Mr Kennody's Rattler, 7st 41b .. (Newman) 2 Mr Kenoedy's Bluebell, 7st 6ib .. (Owner) 3 This was a well-contested race. Going round the back turn Merrybird shot past Bluebell and chased Rattler up the straight, catching the latter on the post, and winning by a short head. There was £22 in the totalisator, and tho dividend was £2 165. NOVEL RACE. Mr I'ine's Brunette, Bst 9)b . . .• (Ward) 1 Mr Dwyer's Sir William, Bst 41b . . (Allen) 2 Mr Stewart's Huntingdon, 7st 101b (Lawson) 3 Time, 2 mm. 22 sec. Thero was £16 in the totalisator. Second Day.— March 10th. Tapanui, March 10th. Tho weather was again hot to-day, and the attendance was larger. Sport commenced with the HURDLE RACE, for which Little John was a warm favourite. A straggling start was effected, Bluebell hanging at the post. Little John led over the first hurdle, and was then pulled off, Bluebell taking up the running. She maintained the lead for a mile, all jumping well. At the mile and three-quarters Little John came to the front, and won, hands down, by two lengths. The totalisator showed £7 invested, £5 being on the winner. HACK RACE. Snider .. •• •• •• x There was £17 in the totalisator, and one on the winner. JOCKEY CLUB HANDICAP. Playboy was a warm favourite, but the other four were all backed. A lot of time was lost at the start owing to Haricot fiddling, and ultimately his rider, Ward, was fined one guinea. The race is oasily described. Playboy jumping away with the lead, and maintaining it throughout. MrO. M'Kenna's Playboy, Bst 31b .. (Whybrow) 1 Mr O. M'Kenna's Haricot, 9st .. /vr ( W(lrd ) \ Mr Dwyer's Glengarry, 7st .. (Newman) 3 Sir Garnet (Ost 91b) and Tera (6at 51b) also started. , . £71 was in the totalieator, 27 being on the winner. The time was 3 mm. 30 sec. COMMERCIAL HANDICAP. Seven started, and a splendid race ensued, Merrybird making the running at a good bat. At three-quarters of a mile Little John and Haricot challenged the leader, and a splendid race ensued up the straight, Little John winning by half a length, a head separating the second and third.
