THE WANGANUI CUP WINNER.

I give below the full pedigree and perlorm- 1 ances of Hailstorm, the winner of this year s I Wansranui Cvp :— I

Hailstorm was bred by Mr Powdrell in 1875, and made his debut on the turf as a three-year-old at the Marton-Rangitikei meeting of 187879. He started for the Produce Stakes of 50 soys a strong favourite among a field of eight, but failed to get a place. He then went to Patea where he was more successful, carrying off the Farmers' Plate of 25 soys, and the Free Handicap of 20 soys (carrying 7st 101b), and beating Confidante, Speculation, and four others? We next find him at Napier, where in the Racing Club's District Plate (w.f.a.) he ran second to Lalla Rookh, but had six others behind him. At the Jockey Club meeting three days later he won the Maiden Plate of 00 soys, defeating Loch Lomoud and four more, while in the Produce Stakes he ran third to his stable-companion Hero and Mr Douglas Tho season 1879-80 was commenced by Hailstorm in good style, for at Patea he won the Carlyle Cup of 40 soys (w.f.a.) and the J.C. Handicap of 80 soys (carrying in the latter 7sfc 41b), and beating King Quail (7st), Loch L» inond Ust 91b), Olawa (Bst 101b), and three otheirf. At Wauganui Spring meeting he carried off the Stakes Handicap of 100 soys, with Bsti &lb vp a cunning glean away from nine

others, including King Quail (7st 101b). At Waverley-Waitotara he next turned up, and still in a running humour, for there he took the weight-for-age Cup of 40 soys and the J.C. Handicap of 100 soys. In the latter race he carried Bst 121b and beat Otawa (9st 21b) and Flora M'Donald (7st 121b), Hailstorm now began to fly at higher game, and accordingly we next find him at Wellington, where, under the light weight of 6st 101b, he ran into third place in the Cup of 400 soys, won by Foul Play (Bst 41b), with Lara (6st 131b) seoond. On the second day he ran unplaoed in the R.C. Handicap of 200 soys (7st), won by Vampire (6st4lb), Hippooampus (7st 51b) second, Chancellor (7st 101b) third. At Wanganui Autumn he finished unplaced in the Flying Handicap (7st 121b), won by Vampire (7st 101b) ; while the same lot befel him in Betrayer's £1000 Cup next day, in which he carried 7st 81b. On returning, however, to more congenial company we see him at Tarariaki a fortnight later winning the Cup (w.f.a'.) of 50 soys, and the Ladies' Purse of 40 As in the previous season so in 1880-1, Hailstorm made', a .good start.' At Wanganui Spring he won the Stakes Handicap of 150 soys, with the 1 top weight of 9st> 21b, and against seven competitors, and also secured the very next race, the Railway Plate of 50 soys (w.f.a.). At Patea he won the Railway Handicap of 25 soys (9st 61b), but in the Forced Handicap of 15 soys was beaten by Redeemer, who was in receipt of 141b. At the Hawke's Bay R.C. January meeting he ran third to Angler and Tara in the Ladies' Purse, and unplaced in the District Plate (w.f.a.), won by Mavis. At Turakina he succumbed m a Scurry Race of 20 soys to the redoubtable Dan, and at Wanganui Autumn had to lower his coloura in the Railway Plate (w.f.a.) to Foul Play. Finally, at Taranaki he succumbed to Libeller in the Cup (w.f.a.), and to the latter's stable-companion, Billingsgate, in the Ladies Purse. It is but right to state that early in this season Hailstorm injured himself slightly, which accounts for him being sent for comparatively minor races instead of taking part in the bigevents. The present season saw Hailstorm. open his campaign at Waitara, where he won theßailway Plate of 30 boys (w.f.a.) from three others. This was not until January, and since then he appears not to have run until he achieved his victory in the Wanganui Cup last week. Hailstorm has at intervals during his career been put to stud duties, and only a fortnight ago Mr Powdrell ran a daughter of. his (Daphne) in the Turakina Sapling Stakes,
