" As we learn by cable Capt. Ellis won the big stake with Snowflight. Capt. Ellis had never hitherto nominated a winneVof the Cup, though he has taken part in several; but in 1874 he won the Waterloo Plate with Mr E.Gibson's Gallant Foe. The runner-up to Snowflight was the Earl of Haddington's Hornpipe. This nobleman is a prominent courser, and his dog Honey wood won the Waterloo Cup in 1880. In 1870 Lord Haddington occupied the same position as he does this year, for he then ran up with Bendiswere.
