Chamber of Cmmerce.

At a meeting of, the /Committee of the Chamber of Commerce held on Tuesday morning, the following report and resolution were adopted :—: — , . REI'ORT OF THE COMMI^TBB ON RAILWAY CROSSINGS. The following suggestion was laid before the Committee of the Chamber of Commerce appointed to consider tho fiupstion of obtaining additional access to the steamer basin by ft level crossing at Jetty street or otherwise, by Mr W. N. Blair, engineer-in-charge of the Middlo Island Railways :—" That in lieu of a level crossing a badge shall be thrown acros' the railway at a height of 15ft, having ultimately a roadway 33ft wide, and side-paths for foot passengers. That in order to obtain an easy gradient, Vogol street shall be raised by a gentle slope commencing at Jetty street until it attains the height of lift ; thence the slope to be continued to the level of the bridge, and descendin" towards the steamer basin by a similar slope. That by" this means the gradiont will be only 1 in 2b, or about the gradient of Water street. As a matter of course the approaches to Vogel street would bo rendered equally accessible." Resolved— "That in view of the manifest advantages of this plan as compared with crossing the railway on a level —tho freedom from danger to life, the avoidance of interruption to traffic and the sortin* of trains, and the convenience of its being o><cn to "passengers and traffic at all times of tho day and nieht, this Comraitteo of the Chamber strongly recoinmond the adoption of tho plan by the Government, and consider it will prove acceptable to :dl parties in Dunedin ; and that copies of this resolution and report bo forwarded to the- Government, the Harbour Board, and the City Council."

A letter from the Hon. tho Postmastergeneral, accompanying a draft of the proposed Companies Bill, was read, requesting that any criticisms or suggestions of amendments which the Chamber may have to make upon it should be furnished with as little delay as possible. It was resolved that it bo remitted to a sub-com-mittee, consisting of the following membersMessrs A. Hill Jack. G. Joachim, T. Brown, and G. Bell, to consider and report to the Chamber on the same.
