WAIKOUAITI CO UNTY COUNCIL

The usual monthly meeting of the Waikouaifci County Council was held at Waikouaiti on Friday. Present : - Messrs James Green (in the chair), H. Orbell, J. Crickmore, J. M'Kenzie, and M. Todd. PKTITIONS. A petition signed by 12 owners and occupiers of land in the township of Osborne, Purakanui, was read, calling attention to the state of the Beach road.— Received, and referred to the inspector forrepoit. Seventeen residents in Blueskiu forwarded a petition praying for work to be dono to the approaches to the bridge over the Waitati near the Government fcottnship. — Ecceived, and referred to the inspector for report. Thirteen landowners at Blueskin petitioned for work to be done on th ■ road leading to the saddle between the Water-of-Leith and Waitati.— Received and 'referred to inspector for renr>rfc , FINANCE. 1 The Finance Commuteo recommended the passing jof accounts amounting to £209 14s 4d. They also re- ; commended that Mr t Alex. Semple's offer of £26 10s for contract No. 103 bo accepted, and-that Mr M'DouIgall'd offer of £2 1 10s for cottage at back of offices be [accepted. —Adopted. I INSPECTOR'S KKI'OiITS. j The Inspector reported that he had examined the .roaM referred to in the petition from ratepayers in jMansford Town, and recommended that about 10.J1 chain* bo done before the bcason is too far advanced, at a cost of about Mo.— Consideration deferred for a month. A report from the I-ivpeotor about deviation near ,Mr Warren's property w,w read. It recommended the 1 pegging and clearing of the road, at a cost of about £6. — Or OrbkTjL moved-" That the report be adopted, and tho inspector be instructed to have tho work allud' d to done at once." -Seconded by Cr Griokmorm, and carried. The Inspectors report, No. 3, referred to work necessary to be done on the road near Mr Clark's property. — Adopted, and the Inspector authorised to place the surface-man on the road to repair the worst parts. CORRBSFONDBNCB. Letters were read from Messrs John Anderson and George Proctor having reference to the opening of a road from near" the eighth mile, Blueskin road, to Glendormid. Mr Canning also appeared in connection with the same matter, and stated that he would want compensation for fencing and land on the line proposed for the road. He expressed an opinion that the road could be made at a better grade than that now in u?e from the Junction Hote!.— Cr Orbelii moved— "'That this Council cannot favourably entertain tho pofcition of settlers in the Sawyers' Bay district until the owneirs of the laud through which the proponod road passes are prepared to exchange the old road for the proposed one without compensation."— Secondod by Cr Todd, and carriod. Mr Crisp, of Kilmo&, applied for a refund of dop; tax.— Granted.

The Secretary to the Treasury wrote that he had forwarded a cheque for £400 14s to the manager of the Bank of New Zealand, Waikouaiti, being amount of subsidy after deduction of £362 for the Dunedin Hospital.—The Chairman stated that he could not understand tho system adopted by the Government in making the deductions. Since 1878 the county had paid to the Dunedin Hospital, or rather hod had deducted, £1858 15s.— Cr M'Kbnzie moved—" That the Chairman wait upon the Hon. the Colonial Treasurer when in Dunedin re the deductions made from the county subsidy for the Duuedin Hospital."— Seconded by Cr Todd and carried.

MrM. Holmes wrote for a road-line to be made from his property at Mount Cargill. -Referred to inspector, to report at next meeting. Mr R. H. Johnson, inspector of sheep, wrote to the effect that having received instructions from the Government to put " The Rabbit Nuisance Act, 1881," into force, he would be obliged for a list of the ratepayers. —Resolved that the information sought for be supplied as far as documents in the office will permit. In reply to a letter read from Mr Matheaon, Shingly Creek, it was resolved that the inspector report for next meeting. Mr James Carey, secretary School Committee, Lower Harbour, wrote calling the attention of tho Council to the bad state of the road near the school. —Referred to the inspector for a report by next meeting of Council. A letter was read from Mr Colin Allan, Dunedin, asking for a copy of the ratepayers' roll. — The clerk was instructed to comply with the request. Mr 11. W. Robinson, of Oamaru, wrote for the rolls of Dutiback, Palmerston, Hawksbury, and Merton districts.— The clerk was instructed to comply with the request. Mr John Johnston wrote asking for repairs to be dono to the road leading to the goods-shed, Waikouaiti.—Referred to inspector to report on. Mr James Cameron, telegraph lineman, wrote that having inspected the telegraph line last week, he had found any amount of gorse encroaching on the road. —Letter received, and consideration of it adjourned to next meeting of Council. A letter was read /rom Mr Edward Campbell, accompanied by a sketch-plan and section of the present district toad near Mr Muirhead's house, with the propoßed deviation of same.— Received, and in reply to be informed that the Council cannot see its way to comply with the request. Mr Edward Campbell wrote that he was willing to give the best line of road through sections 11 and 17, block XII, North-East Harbour and Blueskin, to connect road through Henry's ground.— Resolved - " That Mr Campbell's letter of the 16th inst. be received, and tho thanks of the Council conveyed to him for his offer ; and also that he be informed the inspector will be instructed to report thereon." • The inspector was instructed to examine Barroman's road, Sawyers' Bay district, and report upon its present state and condition at next meeting.
