CLUTHA COUNTY COUNCIL.

The usual meeting of this Council was held at Bal. clutha on Friday, and was attended by Mr W. Dallas (chairman), and Crs. Somerville, Dalgliesh, Hay, Smith, Anderson, and Clarke.

CORRESPONDENTS.

! The Chairman read a letter from Mr Brydono, who stated that he could not be present. A memo, was received from the Secretary of tho Treasury, ,who informed tho Council that the payment on account of land disposed of by deferred payments amounted to £65 18s, made up as follows :— Kelso, [ 18s; Glenkenich, £35; and Waipahi, £30. A circular from the same source stated that the County subsidy for the year amounted to £1846 9s sd, less £137 for maintaining Hospital. Mr H. P. Higginson wrote stating that he had asked Mr Blair to give him a return of the exact cost of putting the pneumatic apparatus in order, but he (Mr Higginsoi.) had ascertained ihat thia had not yet been done, so that until he received the details he could form no idea as to whether the whole cost or what portion of it should be paid by the bridge contractor. o boo 1 as be was furnished with thebe details he would report on the matter and state what portion should be paid by the contractor, and what (if any) by the Council. He would have been glad to havo been able to recommend the payment of the balance due the contractor, but Mr Watson had emphatically stated that he did not intend to pay a farthing of the cost of the repairs to the apparatus, and he had therefore no other course left but to withhold the balance due until the contract was carried out. Another communication from Mr Higginson showed that the expense necessary to put the apparatus in repair would be £24 4b 6d, exclusive of ordinary wear and tear He was of opinon that from his last communication with Mr Watson, it would be no use asking him to pay this amount, and so settle the matter. Mr Watson was clearly liable for the cost of putting it in repair, though he could not be compelled to pay Ihe estimated cost Ue had to recommend that Mr Watson be paid the balance due him on the contract, less the amount for repairs to the miwhinery. The Chairman explained that Mr Watson did not consider himself liable for the amount necessary to repair the apparatus, as it was not in good working order when he received it, and the repairs he had aready effected left the machinery in a better condition than it was when he received it. ' The communications were ciinply received. John Dunne (Mayor of Balclutha) wrote stating that the Borough Council had agreed to the terms of the County Council with reference to the future maintenance of the Balclutha traffic bridge— viz., that they pa_v one-third of the maintenance.— The letter was received. William Nelson applied for a slaughtering license to k<U cattle on his section, in block IX. Pomahaka dis- • rict. 'A similar application was received from John M Culloch for a license to kill on section 9, block IX, in the same district, near Clinton. 'In connection with the above * report was received from Constable Gallagher, slau^hteryard inspector, «ho opposed the granting pf the license, as the yards would, when erected, be within a distance of only six chains from the district road, and about five chains fro.n the manse, the residence of the Eov. J. U. Spence. kelson's application was granted on condition that ho objections were made ; and on the application of Mr Stewart, who appeared for M'Culloch, consideration of tho lattci's application wa* dof erred. William M'Closkio. of Port Molynemc, wrote drawing the attention of the Council to the inequity of the (Juiuity fees for slaughtering licenses as compared with tho. c of tho borough. — No action was taken in the matter.
