At the back of the course, right opposite the stand, Meg Merriles rushed to the front, Alethe, The Marchioness, Elsinore, and Folly in the order named. On rising the hill, The Marchioness ran past Alethe and rook second plaoe, and on passing the stables and entering the straight the race appeared to be at the meroy of Meg Merriles, but Hales now set vigorously to "work on The Marchioness, and the fiUy drew up to Meg Merriles, and a fine race ensued between the pair, ending in a short neck victory for the^Marchioness, Alethe third, Elsinore, fourth, Folly last. Monarque jumped away with the lead, but was soon deprived of his advantage by Caller Herrin, the latter being followed by Calstook. There was very little change on passing the stables, but Caller Herrin, hard held, led past the stand; then came Calsfcock, Avernus, British Workman, with Viceroy and Monarque together. After crossing the dip Caller Heirin and Calstook were running Bide by side, the others close together. On passing the homestead Caller Herrin led, followed by Cfthtook, but at the fix furlongs post all closed up in a bunoh, Avernus last, pulling double. British Worknaa led up the hill and past the stables, and Avernuß was gradually improving his position. It was a fine race on" entering the straight, British Workman still leading, Avernus waiting on him; but when fairly in the straight Sfc Albans called upon Avernus, and the colfc ran up alongside of Workman, soon drew away, and won by a length, Monarque third, Viceroy fourth, Caller Herrin fifth, and Calstock last.
