GLENKENICH.

i (PROM OVR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) . December 6th, ■ ' Shearing has started some time back, and the t weather has been favourable. Flock-owners hare every reason to be satisfied this season, as 1 there has not been half the number of sheep lost as in the winter of '78.- The lambing, too, has been much better, and in some cases there is an increase of over 50 per cent. One rnnholder informs me that of some flocks he has had as high as 70 per cent. ; ana on the whole- he esti- * ■ mates that the average is abont 65 pcr 1 cent., 1 while laet year the average was a little over* 1 ~ per cent. These encouraging reports, coupled with the recent rise in the price of wool, ought to help in no small degree to ameliorate the present monetary crisis. That the Pomahaka and tributaries are destined to rank as one of the best of New Zealand's fishing.gronnds ia manifested by the baskets of - fine trout that are frequently brought into Tapa- i nui by local anglers. The last on view was a splendid fish weighing 6£lb, and was caught in Swift Creek by Mr M'Cormick. Our worthy teacher, Mr V.* Graham, willa lecture on Robert Burns in Tapanui, at an early date, in aid of the North Glenkenich School funds. As Mr Graham's fame as a■. lecturer is more than local, he will no doubt • have a bumper house. - ■ > The Farmers' Club, lately formed in Tapanui, ; ought to be an acquisition to the district, and ' much benefit and a good deal of useful information would be derived by meeting now and again to discuss farming topics, or by introducing— like the Palmerston and Waikouaiti Association, and a few others—such discussions after the ordinary routine business. The weather is favourable, and the orops are making very good progress.
