NGAPARA.
(FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.) With the return of spring, renewed activity is manifested in every department of farming and gardening. Consequent on the scarcity, and therefore high prices ruling for potatoes this season, many have, already begun planting early sorts, hoping, no doubt, there will be a good, early, and payable demand for the new crop. The probabilities are, however, that 3omehave been set fully early, as last year, considerably later than this, we had very heavyfrosts, which withered those it touched. At the same time, it is generally conjectured that after those we have had— and their name ia legion— they are about over. I for one shall bo only too glad to find the supposition correct, for though not a wet winter, it has been an intensely cold one. Ourtownship is soon going to ring with the melodious voices of Parliamentary aspirants, who will endeavour to woo us with their fair smiles, promises, and deep interest for the good of the Colony at large and Ngapara in particular. # I believe I am correct in saying the feeling in this district is strongly in favour of the liberal policy of the Grey Administration, and candidates favouring that party will bo well supported here The concert in aid of our band fund is to take place on the 29th inst. Regular and frequent practices and rehearsals are being held, and the proficiency already acquired in the use of the instruments is highly satisfactory considering the short time the band has bean in existence. It i 3 the intention of the member* to contribute to the programme of the evening. . The secretary of our public library has been instructed to remit to the Education OflSce the amount due for last invoice of books, and to order a further supply to the extent of L2O. Our library will then represent close on L 35 w ™i th of books. This is an institution that will be highly appreciated, and one of lasting good. We hope soon to have a good list of subscribers, and from the almost daily increase of population, we should.
