CUSTOMS REVENUE.
The following revenue was received at the Custom House, Dunedin, during the past week: —
During the past week business in the import market has been quieter than u-ual, and complaints of dull times are very general in all branches of trade Although credit is syuud in town, there ia a disinclination on the part of holders t > push business, many looking forward to securing better prices for their goods than have been obtains iile for some time back. Already several lines t>how an improvement on past business, and, taken all round, a firmer tone pervades the market. The principal event of the weak has been the auction sale of general merchandise held yesterday ia the rooms of Messrs M'Landress, Hepbura, and Co. There waa a full attendance of the trade, but the business done was limited, and the sale of the bulk of the catalogue was adjourned till Tuesday next. .Amongst tho lota quitted were—Devoe's korosene, at Is ; elemes, 4i4 and 4Jd ; valencias, 3Jd ; Sfc Julien claret, 9s and 8s 9d ; sholi almonda, 7£d; and Barceiona nuts, 4sd Brandies are a shade firmer, in consequence of the newß from France of the damage done to the vines by the phylloxera. Prcas have not advanced, but importers are not anxious to push sales at present rates. In ales there U little doing, but tho approach of warmer weather should enliven this trade a little. Sugars are in good demand, and stacks m first hands, of whites especially, are almost nil. The dried-fruit market la firm, and stocks are not Urge. Currants tell at 3Jd to 4d ; sultanas are scarce at 6d; elemes soil at sd; and muicatels at .lid. The iron market showa signs of reviving, and for fencing wire there is better inquiry at improved prices, wos. 6to 8 may be quoted »t £12 10a to £13 10b, with an upward tendenoy. In hops there has teen considerable business done during the week, at prices showing a good advance upon our last quotations. Holdersarenot at present anxious toqultttockain the face of the uncertainty of being able to replace thorn. Butter is gutting scarce, and commands lid per lb. Cheeße is firm at 7d to Bd. Business in the gxain mirket his been dull during the week, and piices sre not so firm. The miliers are not inclined to buy wheat except at a reduction upon current r«t«s, which we quote prime, 4s 8d to 4s 9dordinary to good, 4s 3d to 4a 6d. Oats are only quitted for shipment at—for good feed, 2s to 2a Id • milling, 2s Id to 2« 2d. Barlsyis in better inquiry for malting, and prime samples arejworth 53 to 5a 3d. We hwe tT repon the arrival during the week of the Helen Denny, from London; the Sonntag, from New York ; and the Union Steam bhip Compaq's steamer Penguin, from Glasgow, via Cape of Good Hope.
