London, August 22nd. Turkey is virtually insolvent. Large arrears being due to the army, the Waroffice is closed, the employes being unpaid for Borne moatlis, and refusing to work any longer. August 23rd. The latest news from the Cape reports that proposals of peace have been made by Cetowayo, provided hie deposition is cot insisted on. The proposals have been refused. Sir G. Wolsefey hai demanded unconditional surrender. The remnant of Cetewajo's army is retreating to the back country, with the British in pursuit. Tenders are invited for the new Western Australian loan. (Spectal to the Melbourne Argus ) London, August 23rd. Mr Childera has resigned the directorship of the Great Western Railway, Canada. Germany insists upon the legal recognition of German laud purchases at Fiji. Wool. — Prices are weaker Bince last Saturday. The reductions compared with prices at the close of the June sales are : — Super-or washed fleeces, 1-^d ; ordinary, Id ; scoured (Australian) ordinary crossbreds,^'! ; combing merino, firm. 99,620 bales are catalogued ; 10,000 withdrawn.
