January 15th, 1879. Mr Skene reports : Continued briskness, and a very large demand for a'l cl»Bses. Harvest will not be general for three weeks. Notwithstanding la«t year's lesson and warning, men are ru-hing to the North harvest far too soon, in moat cases leaving good waeea for doubtful. The several departments in the building trade are in full work. Public work", road, rail, and bush employ every suitable man. Coup^ are still quiet Experienced hotel fervants are much tKeded. It is a fodorn hope to expect a goo 1 supply of girls. Ploushraan. fchepherd*, and eardeners are in demand. Wages : Day libour, Bs, 91,9 1, and 10s ; (arpenters, bricklayers, and masons, Us to 16< ; counles, £75 t) £85 ; man cooks, 25s t^ 603 ; ploughmen and shephords, £60, £65, and £70; ordinary girls. 10s to 15s; upper do, 20a to 604 ; dair> hanis, 15.5, 20s, and 255 ; turnip thinners and hay harvesters, 20s per week ; waiters, boots, w^her -up, &c, 20s to 30s; storemen and clerks, 30s to 603.
