Mr Henry Driver (on behalf of the N.Z L. and M.A. Co , limited) reports for the week ending January 15th, 1879, as follows :-• Fat Cattle — The supply was agiin large 210 head beincf yarded. Fully half the number wco only medium quality, the balance good to prime Owincr to the supplies on hand, last week's quotations were tarely maintained Be^t bul'ocka brought from £10 to £15 103 per head ; cows, do, £9 2a 6d to £11. We quote prime beef at 30s per 1001b. Fat Cilves.— l4 penned, and were sold at from 12s to 28 < each. Fat Sheep.— The medium supply of 1688 was yarded for to-day's market, a considerable number of which were half fat and good stores. Prices were rather eas'er than last wepk, and sales difficult to effect. We quote prime mutton at barely 2d per lb. Fat Lambs.— 6ss penned. The demand being 1 slight, prices receded from Is to Is 6d per head, and about 200 were held over for next week. Store Cattle.— There is a fair demand for pood wel'grown" cattle in forward condition. We shall Bell tnmovrow, at Mosgiel Yards, 260 picked bullocks and oo>vs. Store Sheep.— We have inquiries for a large number of both crov-breds and merinos for delivery in March Wool. -"On Thursday last we held our first sale of the season, which was fully reported. Since the sale we have had fair inquiry fur any lotß on private offer ; seUers, however, preferring 1 to "ait the issue of cur next sale, which wo propose to hold on Tuosday next. Sheepskins. — At our pale on Monday last wb offered a small catalogue of 1300 skins, for which there wag brisk competition at a little advance on the previous week. Butchers' crosu-bred* in wool brought 4s lOd ; lambs, It Id each ; pelts, 41 to 0 1 each ; station skins, sjd to 6&d par lb Hides.— We sold 170 at an average of Si per lb. Tallow.— Rough fit, small fUpply, sod briskly at 21s to 21b 6d. No rendered tallow. Grain —Wheat : market Is d'noping ; near approach of harvest, coupled with the reduction of the duty on Australian fl mr, nukea mil'ers cautious in buvinpjat rednoed figures. We quote prime mill ng 3s 9i ; medium, 3s 3d to 3' Cd ; fowls' wheat. 2s 9 i to 2s 10J. Oats are declining in value-feed, 33 8d to 3s 91 ; milling, 3a lOd. Barley, nothing doing. We have cl ared off a faw hundred sacks inferior to ordinary Southern at from 3s 3'l to 33 6d. Birley, none offering. Oats move off slowly at from Si 8d to 3s 9J for good to fine feed. No inquiries for milliner purposes, but extra samples are taken for feed at up to 3s lOd. Fat Lambs —655, of nredium qua'ity. 450 were taken by the trade at from 61 6 dto 9s 31. •Store Cattle.— There are inquiries for quiet wellbTed steers, for paddock fattening. There are few offering, however, and buyers do not seem inclined, to give the pricp.3 for which thoy are held. Store Sheep. — We have several inquiries for -sound, young sheep, both merino and b,»H'Veds, We have several sales pending, but no transactions to report. Wool.— Our flrnt sale of tho season will be held on Fiiday, the 17th instaut, when we will offer ftbout 800 1 ales of washed and greasy wojls in fine condition, fur positive sale. 'Sheepskins, Hides, &a.— We hald our usual sale on Mo d ly. Sheepskins fetched from Is to 4s 3d, according to weight and quality- < Grain. — Wheat continues very dull of ealo, and. prices are nominal : best milling, 3s lOd to 4i ld ; interior, 2s 3d to 8s 3d. WOOL SALE. The first wool sale ol this season's clip was held Vai% afternoon by Mr Henry Driver, for the New Z aland Loan and Mercantile Agency, at their wool Btores, Rattray street Jetty. The attendance of buyers waa large, representing both l"cal and foreign firms, who competed with gieat spirit ; and though prices as compared with last year show a considerab'e reduction, yet tlvy were fully up to our expectations. Only a few loti were pas ed in. Wools in grease commanded most attention, washed aud scoured not ciming up to our values. Merino wools were in very limited supply, and corn- ■ manded higher relative rates Greasy cross bred, in light condition, brought from BJd to 10 1 ptr lb ; heavier, in grease, from 6r! to BJ. Merino, in gre-wo, sold from 8d to 9|d, nothing very light-conditioned being offered. Washed cross-bred sold at 13} d. and stoured at 14|d.
