MAEREWHENUA.
Oamaru, January 13th. Professor Ulrioh was greatly pleased with the appearance of the Maerewhenua Goldfields. He fays that if the field was in Victoria it would attract a large mining copulation. Tho great drawback is want of water. A deputation from the Maerewhenua Mining Association waited upon the Hon. It Stout to present a memorial, praying the Government not to sell cfci'taiu land in a block at Maerewhenua, upon which a number of miners are at woik, bnt to dispose of it in small blocks under the agricultural lease sybtein. It w;is pointed out that miners would, if this were done, be able to supplement their earnings on the goldfields by engaging in agricultural pursuits. Mr Stout replied that he was not personally aware o£ the intentions of the Govern ment in relation to the land, but he would make inquiries of the Commissioner, and give tho deputation every available information at a, later hour in the day. Subsequently the following memo, was handed to the deputation :—: — " Memo, for Mr Stout. I beg to state that the petitioners Lave been mi-informed with refer, ence to the proposal to soil land iv the locality named to the runholderi, no buuh proposition ever having been made to, or entertained Ivy, the Land Board. Thi-J land was to be subdivided with the view of leasing it under tlio Agricultural Emulations, c.iro being taken to reserve auriferous l.u.ds and water races ; but tho survey, luruleiatan'l, has been delayed fur a short time, at the request "f the Marewheima MineiV Association, until the district Bhould be visitod by Professor Ulrich. D. M. M'Goun, pro Commissioner Crown Lauds. January 11th, IS7D." A private telegram from Macetown was received in Duuedin on tho 10 h, stating that tho i Tipporary and Homeward Bound Companies were crushing, and that everything was working well. The tramways are reported to be a great success.
