CARDRONA.

That energetic party, the Try Again] Company, has just completed its new pump shaft lOOffc.deep. A holiday was declared last week, when the christening of the new wheel took place, the little, ceremony being very gracefully performed by Mrs Lafranchi. The new pumping gear worked to a nicety — in fact, everything in the shape of machinery and appliances in connection with this mine is thoroughly ship-shape, and reflects much credit on the men, and also accounts for the large dividends netted by shareholders during the past 12 months, out of ground abandoned by parties who could only make tucker out of it, working, as they were, according to " Scotch navigation." Considering the number of Chinese located on Cardrona, I have never heard of a case of petty thieving during the years I have resided here. The boxes of the various claims are, as a rule, washed down every evening. The prospecting box of the Try Again, containing about two ounces of gold, was, however, left without being run down on Friday evening. On the same night it was cleaned most systematically and in a workmanlike manner by someone who evidently knew "the run of the ropeß." The bottom stones being stacked very neatly alongside the box, the brush and the scraper put away carefully in their proper place?, and not a speck left in the box, proves the perpetrator to be an expert. — Gor.
