OTAGO AGRICULTURAL AND PASTORAL ASSOCIATION.

The first Annual Show of the above Society, on the Potbury P.irk, on 29th instant, promises to be a great success, and we are pleased to notice that private prizes are being most liberally off ered by many firmt and associations, for the encouragement of different kinds of stock and produce. The butchers' prize of £15, which is advsrtiscd in our columns of to-day, is an exunple ,qf liberality which deserves to be recorded, and we Should bp very glad to see many of our leading trades- . men showing their interest ; m the success of the' Show t>y f oUbh ing suit. It has al ways been rather a. blot' on'our reputation in Dunedin for enterprises m fostering * every thing tending to the good of the city wa lire in, ttut there never yet has oeen a metropolitan Show, where stock, produce, and manufactures, from all parts of the Province, can come into competition; and without competition the standard of. excellency in . nnythinu is apt to fall short of what it should be That a show properly conducted i« of 'great general benefit to the town in .which it is held, ia so well known that it seems quite unnecessary to mention the fact. Witnessthe _ Royal ani Highland and Agricultural Societies', exhibit-ons in the Old Country; and. to come nearer home, take the late successful 6ho\v in Ctirirtchurch ' where the number of people on the ground was estimated at 14,000, and the money ta>eh at the gates was about £750. When the railway is open throueh from Christchurch to Inveicargitt, we are quite sure that Dunediu will not be behind the City of the Plains e ! ther in offering handsome prizes, or in the numbers wh> will flock totne grounds to view— let ushope superior stock, implements, produce, &c. We understand thii the Committee i are arranging with the railway authorities for spe.ial facilities being offered for travelling, ana n ith the races on the following day (St , Andrew's Day), the' doable attraction, will surely crowd our city, and encourage a brisk business in ! oar shops for a few days. And surely every one Jnt' is city, whatever his vocation .will find something to interest him on tbe Forbury on 29th instant, either sheep, cattle, horses, 'agriculturaVimplements- ntrri-' cultpzal produce,' dairy, produce; wool, of 'New' Zealand manufactures. ,- , ,Wo sincerely trust the show ,- will be a success ia every respect. , , ,t, t •
