GREEN ISLAND COAL MINES.
One of those pleasant meetings of employers and employed took place at Green Island on Saturday evening, when Messrs G. W. Kliott and A. Lee Sm th, the proprietors — of the Green Island Coal Companyentertained tho men at. their niine (I ite the Abbotsford Colliery) at supper at lirown's Green Islan.-l Hotel. Jlr Eliot oecupi-cUhe ch.\ir, with Mr Charles Sampson, tho late ' proprietor of the mine, on his ri he. Mr smith acted as vice-chairman. After full justice had been done to the really excellent banquet provided by hist Brown, the usual loyal toasts were proposed by the chairman. The Vice-Chairman than pronosd the health' of the " Mine Manager" (Mr Wisl'atn Simpson), by whom tha toast was suitably acknowledged. ■ : , Tbe Chairman thon proposed the toast of the " Workmen at the mine," stating that their hearty co-operation with the to>*n management was essential to the SJce^ss of the undertaking which they had in hand— and that Mr Smith and he had resolved upon the plan then adopted, of meeting the men in order to encourage those feelings which should exist between employers and employer!. He hoped to f-ee them all present at a simuar gathering next j ear, intimating that it iyas intended t > m .ke it an animal meetiag.
Mr Kaxe responded on behalf cf th-s workmen, and expressed their sati. faction at the cordial and friendly feeling evinced by their employers. Mr Cf? aries Sampson proposed "Success to Die Gveea Island Coal Company," .uil in doing so explained his reasons for having deposed of the property. He impressed upon the men the necssity of working harmoniously with their employers, dwelling at leDgth uj/ou the identical nature \-i their interests.
Sir i-jimi replied on behalf of ths company, statinsr tint as he had undertaken iho general supervision of the company's business, he would constantly be bioughfc in direct contact -\vilh it& woOirnun, and that if at :«ny t'tneihey ha.l any grievances they have but to state them to ensure investigation and redress.
