dunedin Commercial Report.

Witness Office, Thursday Morninjf. The general trade o! the market continues dull, although the prospects of improvement are sanguinely regarded, and during the past two week«, as th< opportunities have arisen, speculative transactions, baaed entirely on that confidence, have freely taken place. Brandy remains dull. If the demand was pre- | viously limited, prices \rere fairly maintained, tiut tne operation of the outside c.iuse to wh eh we alluded in our last, has had the effect of decidedly weakening the market Henuesjy, in bulk, might still yhld a profit at highest quotations : but in case, a profit can with difficulty be attained, lnfeiior. brands are more difficult still to move. In whisky, there ia not a brisk, but a rtgrnlar enquiry for small trade lots :— ITMurchie, 2 years old, L quoted at 5s j 3d ; new, 4s 9d to 5s ; ftt'U-regor's Balmenacb, a brand lately favourably introduced, ii quoted at Gs Cd ; Glennri*, at. 5a 9d ; Greenlees pure H malt, at 5a 9d ; ArJbejr, at from 5a 9d to 6s ; Lmnville, at f rum 5s 9d I to 63, and in caae, at from 17s to ISa. In rum, enqu>ry, ban slightly improved, Lemon Hart's beinK in reque>t. Geneva is moving — a large sule of, JDKZ being reported at 123, holders consideringit. as beiDg now worth more money. Wines are in rather improved demand. Graham's port 3 have been goin# off slo » - ly. But large sales we hear daring the p.ist week have been mude, of what brand however, beyond that the wines were port, we have not heard. In tobacco the shipment lately to hand of Harlequin, ex Elsinoro, has been entirely c eared out, mis brand well maintaining its farmer price. Ale continued dull— Tennent's in moderate request. Porter is also dull- quotations aa samples of the ruling of the market being for : — Bull Dog, »t from Us 3d to 11s 6d ; Guinness 's bottle Iby Burke, at from 11s 3d to lis Cd ; Pi;? brand, at from lls to lls 3d ; Blood's, 11s. In tea, stocks of last season are getting much reduc d, medium very light, and low class boxes ami half-chests all hm >tUi ol the market. We may mention that the Carl Ludwig, consigned to Messrs W. and J. Scoular, ! is announced to sail with a full cargo from Poo-Ch"w-Foo, and is likely to be the flr»t arrival ot thU year's cr"p for thi3 mar net. The importers are alviso'l tbat the quality of teas this se.iaon will be superior to those of the last. In tinned fish quotations ranuin much the same as in our last, viz., the new salmon, lib tins, at from 9i Cd 10 10s ; lobst-rs, the anme ; oysters (old), at from 5a to 5s GJ. Hops cont nue to move very slowly. Ihe improved value in JUagland, which we lately referred to, baaed on tbe h .rvest, failures in Englaud and Germany* is further strengthened by private correspondence. "We alluded then to the ravages of tho aphis fly. ' One writer upon this remarks : — " The fly I do not deem so prejudicial is the general unkind appearance of the bine." In galvanised iron, the market is reported hardly as strong, aud some closing aales were affected last « eek at a slight concession. Breadstuff^ and grain are less firm, although prices have not yet gone down. Flour is at prt&ent quoted by the millers at £17 10s in sacks, and £18 in small bags. In wheat, the market is well supplied with medium and inferior, but neither are in demand. Milling is less firm, excepting for very choice samples of prime. Quotations for tbe first are from 5s 6a to 64 9d ; for the lat.ier, from 7s 6d to 73 9d. Bat to place a large quantity, lower prices would have to be accepted.
